What People Are Saying About Open Eye Cafe

In Short – The entrance ramp of the Open Eye Cafe leads to a small porch, perfect for a fall evening's pick-me-up. The creak of the front door raises eyes and prompts the barista to greet you with a broad smile. The interior is cozy, scattered with thrift store chairs and couches that consistently rotate and change positions. It just goes to show that the best way to do things is often the simplest.

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
In the corner, you might spy a solo guitarist picking bluegrass or perhaps a jazzy funk combo laying down lo-fi grooves for all the bean heads. The music is mellow and offsets the edge that often accompanies caffeine dens.
Know Before You Go:
Don't stop in hungry. The menu is strictly coffee, tea and Italian sodas, with iced and decaf options.

If you don't know tea, don't serve it.

by bixby007 at Citysearch

During my last (and final) visit, I asked to transfer my tea to a different container to stop the steeping process ("Open Eye" uses French presses to steep tea). After criticizing my request, the manager rolled his eyes and reluctantly handed me an empty container. I don't know how the coffee is at this place, but they don't know the bare basics of tea making, and they have a bad attitude. And the atmosphere? Looks dirty, without any character and it's freezing inside.

  • Pros: inexpensive
  • Cons: bad attitude, dirty, cold

Outstanding.

I consume quite a bit of coffee over the course of the week, but I certainly look forward to my weekend mornings at Open Eye. As a coffee lover, I have to say that everything from their mochas to their drip is delicious. I only wish they had more by way of food to nibble on while drinking and playing on their wonderful wi-fi.

Not Driade

by gourmetgirl86 at Citysearch

The coffee is good, but i haven't found the same love for it that the other reviewer did--when i went there last night, they were only rated 90.5 by the health inspector and by the way--it's not in Chapel Hill, it's in Carrboro. The best coffee in CH remains DRIADE (even though both shops are owned by the same person and the baristas sometimes trade spaces).

Chapel Hill's best coffee

by llwright at Citysearch

I consider myself a coffee snob. The Open Eye has the best coffee I've ever had. I stop by as often as I can before work and get a cup. I wished they opened before 7:00. Always rated 99 or 100 by health inspector. You can't beat that! Reminds me of the 60s era.

  • Pros: the best
