In Short – Tables and booths. The red and black schematics of Oriental decor. You'll see everyone from truckers to Durham professionals to youthful hipsters. Possibly the best Vietnamese fare in the area. From pho--Vietnamese rice noodle soup with chicken--to steamed dumplings to lemongrass chicken, you can't go wrong with the dishes here.
Always Better Than Pseudo Italian Food!

Sadly ownership of Kim Son has changed twice since my family and I came to Durham in 2003 and it's quality has slipped with it but it is still far better than the over loaded with cheese pseudo greek/ italian food found throughout the state whatever that is supposed to be,the horrific thai and chineese, pizza joints that sell medium pizza's as larges and for the price of them as well! And lastly the horrible seafood restauraunts that sell three day old seafood when the ocean is a day away! North Carolina has a lot to learn about restauranteering and they could begin by learning from Kim Son which uses only fresh ingredients daily prepared with fresh oils one dish at a time!
A little bland but good

I love the idea of a great little restaurant hiding in the middle of a not so nice area - the car dealer next door and the shady motel on the other side don't create the most inviting area - and I was hoping that the lack of being in a trendy spot might = authentic food at low prices. But unfortunately, this was not the case. The waitstaff was extremely friendly and the prices were decent (about $10-12 for main course item), but the food was surprisingly bland. Not bad - we ate it and would probably eat it again- but noticeably lacking spices and flavor usually found in Vietnamese cooking. All in all, the ambiance was nice, there was a nicely eclectic crowd, love that it is a small local business, and with many many items of the menu, perhaps we just chose the wrong two dishes, both of which were vegetarian choices, maybe that makes a difference.
LOVE this place

A small family run establishment that serves traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The fresh spring rolls are the best in this area. No matter what you order it will be made fresh & served hot!!!! I would highly recommend this place!
