Lodgings with a rich history..
The Scene
This 208-year-old inn sits on 10 acres west of the University of North Carolina. It once served as the homestead of Bingham School, a preparatory institution for young men awaiting entry to UNC Chapel Hill. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll find museums, a planetarium, a botanical garden and more nearby.
The Details
The grounds are adorned with pecan trees, gardens, hammocks and benches--the latter came from the original school. The guest rooms date from 1790 to 1835 and display lovely period furnishings, fireplaces and original cupboards. Private bathrooms have claw-foot tubs. Extra indulgences include thick robes, fine linens and homemade cookies. The elaborate breakfast is served in the dining room or on the patio in good weather. It features such treats as pear-almond waffles, baked German pancakes and huevos rancheros.
