The Scene – During the day this Ninth Street hot spot hosts a decadently laden buffet that's packed with professionals. At night it morphs into a sushi bar/nouvelle American dining room/wine connoisseur hangout. On the weekend things heat up with live music--a little jazz or some swing--that draws plenty of Durham yuppies and designer-clad Duke co-eds. – – The Food – Fresh, appealing ingredients and the trendiest of dishes, George's lunch buffet allows diners massive choices--everything from herb-roasted chicken and garlic mashed potatoes to hummus and…

Worst Dining Experience EVER!!!!

by bgs1977 at Citysearch

This dining experience completely ruined what was supposed to be a very special evening out with my husband. Let me state that I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years, and so I tend to be very understanding. To point out just a few of the many offenses we experienced: It began by waiting for 15-20 minutes just to receive the beer and glass of wine we ordered, in a half full bar. We then waited more than 40 minutes for our entrees. At no point did our server stop to explain, offer us bread, etc. We were, however, positively thinking the entire time, the reason it was taking so long, was because it was going to be an amazingly superb dinner. Sad, sad, sad. My fish, which was the most expensive entree on the menu was SO overcooked and insanely bland. We sat there for 20 minutes, looking at our uneaten food, until the server finally stopped, and we politely asked for boxes (to take the fish home to our cats). She proceeded to get a manager who came to our table, and tried in a very unconvincing way to apologize for the inadequate dinners. He left us with two free dessert tickets; which were left on the table; as you could not pay me to go back to that restaurant. Again, worst dining experience ever. A $70 tab for two barely edible dinners. If you want a nice dinner try Metro 8 across the street where a less substantial financial obligation is required, for delicious food and wonderful service. (as a side note, George's seemed a bit trashy for the $30 an entree charge)

  • Cons: horrible service, horrible food, high prices, dirty restaurant

great food, terrific selection, with good or miss service.

by xscape at Citysearch

I've gone to George's Garage since they opened. Once they served food during a blackout and that was resourceful. Another time I was alone at the bar making frantic calls for some emergency and the bartender was very kind and alert. On a few occasions the dinner service has been really off and the wait staff was not up to the level I thought they should be (ie very very slow and not really faking interest in their jobs which is intrinsic to their jobs, not getting orders rights or bringing condiments we requested) I just go during lunch where it is cafeteria style and forgo all the waiters don't like to wait on women thing.

The food is really good and fresh. IDK about the sushi, never had it.

  • Pros: great food and selection
  • Cons: service can be really good or really bad

Great Variety

by consumer08 at Citysearch

We've been to George's Garage twice and took out of town guests with us both times. We were impressed by the variety on the menu since it is billed as a seafood restaurant, but it's a good thing because some of us don't like much in the way of seafood. The decor and ambience is nice and the service was good each time. The wait staff could have come by a little more to check on us and we were missing some plates, but we used our bread plates for the appetizers. People in our group ordered lamb, trout, pasta, and filet mignon and everyone loved what they ordered. Their chocolate mousse cake was also excellent.
