Best Bar on Franklin. Library is a Bar's Bar. There are beer pong tables in the back and a dance floor in the front. There are DJs on most busy nights and it's a great place to shake your booty. The bar is very big and there are always specials. I recommend Library for dancing club scene and also just a chill place to sit and drink.
Bouncers don't do their job. Not safe. Not fun..
Went to the library for the first time last Saturday. What started out as a fun night quickly turned into a complete nightmare. A couple of my friends (guy and girl) were playing at the beer pong table at the back. After they asked the large man they were playing with to stop cheating he knocked my female friend to the floor and dumped a pitcher of beer on her head!
This is not the type of girl who has been in any kind of altercation in her entire life. She started sobbing and we took her to the bathroom to clean her up. This all happened in front of the bouncer (correction I found out he was just a bar back) who did NOTHING. I even spoke to the guy who dumped beer on her. (He was well over 6 feet tall and 250 pounds and doesn't have a problem hurting girls so I should have kept me mouth shut). He informed me himself that this was "his table/his bar" and could do whatever he wanted. When some guy we don't even know told him he was out of line he shoved him against the wall and cuffed him in the ear.
After enough people in the area got upset the bouncer came over and he eventually pretended to be kicked out the back. My friends and I decided to go out the front entrance but I had to go back in to get my jacket and saw the large juiced up or mentally unstable man walking back into through the rear entrance high fiving the bouncer, obviously friends.
If all of that wasn't enough my husband was discussing this incident with a group of friends and it turns out they had been to the library a few weeks prior and had a similar incident with seemingly the SAME GUY over beer pong! (how many extremely huge african american males with a serious mental instability about beer pong can there be)
What I don't get is this man has chased out well paying post graduate patrons (we've moved past the cheap pitcher chapter of our lives) on multiple occasions. It is obvious that the library and its bouncer have no interest in keeping its customers safe and doing good business. It’s only a matter of time before this individual seriously hurts someone. If it had been me he shoved to the floor and poured beer on I would have pushed charges.
Still contemplating contacting Chapel Hill police so they can be aware of this ticking time bomb.
Best bar on Franklin St, hands down. I found this bar one night when I was in Chapel Hill randomly, and have been traveling from Raleigh ever since just to go there. It is always a fun time at the library. The crowd, atmosphere, specials, dj, and dance floor allow constant entertainment. I am the library's biggest fan.
Good Place for Dancing. I went to the Library on a Saturday night. It was my first time EVER out in Chapel Hill, and I had a lot of fun. They played great music, and I never once could stop dancing. We hung out with some really nice, fun people there and had a great time. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to dance, but it's also good for those who like to chill out as they have places to sit and play pool, if you don't mind the loud music.
Awesome Time. We celebrated my friend's birthday at The Library this past Saturday night and OH what a time!!!! We originally were going to another bar but when we heard the music, we had to check it out.....It was an awesome time! DJ Dre Vaughn kept the music fresh and stylin', people dancing, buying the birthday girl drinks (thanks BARTENDER!!), no snobs or jerks, awesome, cool place to get your dancing fix and parch your thirst, well will be returning :)
Rough crowd, rude staff, worse drinks.
I avoid The Library at all costs out of all places on Franklin Street . I've lived in Chapel Hill since I was a half year old and have been to every location on Franklin Street for almost 10 years. I have one friend who goes there to try to pick-up random strangers and he drags me there sometimes, and I usually end my night and go home rather than face the prospect of going inside The Library.
I have been repeatedly:
(1) Served drinks that are all cheap alcohol and no mix, think house vodka on ice.
(2) Surrounded by a rough crowd trying to pick-up my friends on the sketchy dance floor
(3) Overcharged for drinks (please watch your tab, see other reviews)
(4) Treated so very rudely by the staff. The service is horribly slow; I remember actually timing the wait at 23 minutes just to get a Bud Light bottle.
They changed management recently and the current owner (or manager?) is highly unprofessional and has a temper; if you actually check your tab and see that you've been overcharged, don't even bother trying to dispute it. You'll be yelled at and thrown out; I've known at least two graduate students in professional schools who have gotten thrown out of the bar. There are too many other places on Franklin Street that define the Chapel Hill experience (and that have none of the above issues) to risk ruining your night by going to Library.
Further, if you have an event you'd like to plan, good luck keeping a rough crowd out of the place so your guests can enjoy the event in peace. I know several local promoters and event organizers who won't book events there for just the reasons I mentioned here. They prefer Tallula's and Mansion 462, which are just down the street, for a more open, clean, non-sketchy space with a better sound system, bigger dance floor, and most importantly a professional staff to work with. Check out Top of the Hill for drinks with class and taste, East End Martini Bar for three different bars in one (dance floor, Martini bar with live music, and pool tables), and PT's (dance floor, outdoor patio).
Also, note that the several of the positive reviews are written by people with only one review. Hmmm.
Bar none, worst establishment in chapel hill-scratch that- NC. Not only did I get charged $100.00 for an $18.00 tab, but I was verbally assulted by two bartenders and a manager. Then they claimed to have cancelled my tab and put it on my boyfriend's and instead kept the charge on mine, totaling $200.00 for the two of us. The manager yelled in my face before kicking my entire group out of the bar, solely because we attempted to dispute a bill that was 5 times the amount we actually bought and received. My whiskey sour was ALL whiskey- no sour, I waited at least 10 minutes for every crappy drink I got, and I have never been treated so despicably by anyone, much less any bar manager, in my life.
Great Friday Night. We went on Friday night. The line to get in was not long at all. The drink service was fairly quick and the dance floor was full. It was a lot of fun, we will definitely go there again. There is a really good mix of guys and girls. I would definitely recommend it.
This Chapel Hill social scene proves it's hip to be bookish..
You won't find too many freshman in this long, narrow bar full of wooden tables and comfortable stools. Gone are the books, replaced with a university-sized selection of beer and liquor. On weekends, an older crowd of professionals or grad students can be found socializing and enjoying the live music. Maybe it's filling out a membership form that dissuades some undergrads--especially those with dubious IDs. During the week, though, it's not uncommon for the Library to host Greek events.
The Library Rocks.
Unreal, last saturday (1/28/06) was insane.
I didn't get there till 11:30 and the line was out the door. The place was looking real nice.
I think it has been updated since the pic on citysearch. I hadn't been in a couple of years and they really made added a nice flavor. I like the vibe a lot and the people were cool.
