Tips for Spartacus Restaurant

January 31, 2013

Let's be honest here, it was grosse. Poor quality. Poor everything. I've had Greek food from xeni that's better. I couldn't bring myself to go back. After the awful appetizer and funky salad, I changed my order to marinara pasta because I was scared to get anything else...mushy. Chipped plates. I can look past old decor if the food is good absolutely, but no. Service was just ok. My bf kept apologizing for suggesting it from online reviews.

Poor Excuse formGreek Food. I had been a regular customer of Nikos until the owner retired and closed the restaurant. I know what good Greek food should be. My wife and I went to Spartacus last nitht and as soon as we were seated in the drab, poorly decorated facility, we both felt like we were in an episode of restaurant impossible. The food was terrible, spinach pie, angel hair pasta with chicken, greek salad. While we were there, a waitress came out of the kitchen with a plate of the worst smelling seafood I have ever smelled. My wife said that food is rotten. About that time, the cook came out of the kitchen, we were seated nearby, and he chased her down to return the dish because I assume he knew it was rotten. The only conclusion I can arrive at in regards as to why anyone is in there eating is they simply have never had real, first class quality Greek food so they do not have any idea what they are eating. Trust me, do not go to this pathetic excuse for a Greek restaurant.

Disappointed in service and poor manors of manager. I Love the food but hated the evening. We have been going to this restaurant for years and this was obliviously not the night for it. There were five adults, three children around two years old each and a baby. I was holding the baby when the waitress took the drink orders so I wasn’t paying full attention to her. So when she didn’t check with me on it I figured my fault but when she brought the others their drinks and didn’t check with me then I though well that is kind of off service. We had ordered one appetizer and one cheese thing, green beans and carrots for the children to share as there meal then we placed the order for the adult’s food. The waitress brought out the kids food with the appetizer. So the children ate their food and then got bored and restless. This wouldn’t have been so bad had our food come out shortly after as is it took an hour to get our food. When one of the dads finally asked when ours would be out the waitress informed him as she breezed by that it was probably next. It wasn’t we had one more party in front of us before we were served our food. The food was burnt on the outside but good on the inside of 4 out of 5 of us. Then splitting the ticket the waitress had trouble with who was on what ticket and who needed a box. She also informed us she couldn’t split the kids meal onto two tickets. Either she didn’t know how or wouldn’t. Although past experiences at Spartacus they could or did. When she brought our tickets and a box she still couldn’t give it to the one person who had any food left on her plate. She kept trying to give it to one of the dads who had a few fries left and some bread on his plate. I am sorry but all we could think is can’t you see the one person with the full plate of food is the one who needs the box (we have now told you three times), As the kids got fed up and she couldn’t tend them and eat. Oh and here is some fun the waitress marked through our bill and wrote 18% her initials and the new amount at the bottom for us. So now we are all a little pissed she is telling us what to tip her. I am used to a party of eight or so getting the mandatory 18% and didn’t realize that 5 adults would or that children and a baby who can’t even eat the food got counted. So one of the moms goes to the manager. Just to say it was a less than satisfactory experience at his establishment. He only wants to know what she wants, keeps interrupting her and walks off while she was talking to him (or better to say trying to). He goes in the kitchen and we can hear his telling the waitress to handle her F*cking tables. How is that at all professional? I mean bad service is one thing but he is the owner/manager it is his place to be the face of his establishment. We have never had that happen before. It was just a disappointing experience.

NEW RACIST MANAGER RUINS WIFE BIRTHDAY LUNCH. I have lived in Durham for almost 40 years and have been visiting Spartacus Restaurant since I was 18 years old. Today is my wife's birthday and she called Spartacus and asked if she could use her birthday dinner coupon at lunch. It was for 15 dollars off. When we were done eating the new racist manager told my wife that she was the only one answering the phone and implied that my wife was lying and informed us that she could only discount 1/2 off her lunch. We were lied to and discriminated against because of color. She was hateful, verbally abusive and not friendly at all. I asked for the owner and the only response that I received was, "I don't know when they come in." Horrible customer service. If you want to be treated unfairly, then Spartacus is the place to go. I will NEVER go there again or refer anyone to this place.

I joined citysearch to rate this restaurant a 1. None of the staff seemed invested in really providing a good experience for the customer. They were nice enough, but the food took forever to come out and they brought the wrong food to the table. When they returned with the right dish, it was burnt.

They are running at $10 dinner menu on their website, which they were not going to honor "because they weren't running that special anymore." You can't do that. Somebody in our party eventually argued with them enough that they honored it for our check only.

Also, half of the menu at this Greek restaurant is Italian. Not sure what is going on here.

Not to shabby. So first let me qualify my experience at Spartacus. On Valentine's day I made reservations there at 5 pm ath 7pm, because I had dropped the all, but atleast I was able to make the reservation. First the outside apperance isn't all that great, but if there was some nice landscaping it would look a lot better. The inside decor is nothing special, but I certainly wouldn't complain about it. Now before I went i previewed the menu online, but because of the holiday they had a limited menu. We got the fried calamari as the an appetizer and it was average nothing that special it was addequate. For a limited menu the service was still quite slow. I got the lobseter ravioli which was amazing. While my significant other got a greek sample type plate which is also quite good. I don't say I'm an expert on greek food but it was good to me. It was a little pricey, but you know i belive you get what you pay for.

Good restaurant!. We just tried Spartacus for the first time and very much enjoyed it. We are new to the area (moved from LA, which is one of the best cities for great food), and this is the third mediterranean restaurant we tried in the triangle.

Spartacus is not the most hip restaurant with trendy decor. It even looks kind of dumpy from outside. Therefore, if you are the type of person who likes flashy new looking things, this would not be a right place. However, it has its own characteristics, and they serve very good *comfort* food. Some people said that it's expensive, but I don't think that's true. Most dishes come with salad or soupe, and the bread they serve is delicious. If you are willing to spend 15-18 dollars per person, you would be stuffed.

What we really liked about this place is that this is the type of restaurant that attracts al kinds of 'everyday' people. Customers around us were quite diverse- from young student looking people to older couples of all races.

Among other mediterranean restaurants, I like the food served by the restaurant on Franklin street (downtown chapel hill) more, but it could just be my taste.

A Great Restaurant. My experience at Spartacus is during the day and it is a great place to enjoy great Greek food. The buffet, available everyday, offers a real variety of traditional Greek food including Greek Salads, Falafel, Olives, Grilled Portobello Mushrooms, chicken parmesian, spinach spanakopita, tzadziki, and a bunch of great tasting stuff that I have no idea what it is called.

The bottom line is the buffet is a GREAT deal, I think I usually get out for $10 or so and I always get way more than my money's worth. But even more important than that is that the buffet gives you a chance to try different Greek specialties that you might not otherwise choose to try. Greek food is great anyway. I'm no expert in Greek cuisine, but Spartacus really is a great restaurant to me. I highly recommend it!

Incredibly Delicious!. I went here with my Meetup dining out group, and I have to say it was a most memorable experience for me... The food was incredibly delicious... I got the buffet, and could not believe the quality of the food.... Everything was absolutely delicious... I had a pasta dish with shrimp and feta and tomatoes that was absolutely the most delicous dish I have ever had in a restaurant... I had mussels in garlic sauce that was excellent also... I tasted everything on the menu and was not disappointed with one thing on the menu...It was ALL exceptional... The food is FAR above any that I have had in any other Greek restaurant anywhere...

The staff was attentive and very friendly, and I really enjoyed my dinner there... I have been telling EVERYONE about how fantastic this restaurant is...

No wait, excellent food, friendly staff and reasonable prices works for me!

I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant... I can't say enough good about it!
