Durham >Bali Hai
Delicious Times TEN.
This is not the place for you vegan, food allergy, needie bodies. The basic premise is this- COME HUNGRY, grab a bowl, fill it with stuff you like, they cook it, you eat it, pay and leave. No big deal or fuss. So if you're a fussy person, you're not going to like it.
Where the heck does a to-go box come into play? No wonder you were treated like you are nuts- Just sit down and eat your food! If you really want to take leftovers than be an environmentalist and bring a re-usable Tupperware. They should BAN to-go boxes anyways. Its a drain on the environment.
No to-go boxes, bring your own. I have heard that many people have had bad experiences with this restaurant. I first ate at the one in Raleigh about 12 years ago and was told that you had to bing your own to-go box, they would not give you one... ok, that is their policy. Although the selection of food is less than at Crazy Fire, I love the sauces. I always get 2 bowls since the second is only $1. I also always eat here with my friends who are on the Durham Police force, so that may be why we get decent service. I get the combination with Curry, spicy level of 9. I eat here a few times each month and never get tired of it.
Worst Restaurant Experience of My Life. The manager of this restaurant is an angry person with absolutely no tact! The entire staff is just rude and unpleasant. I went there with a group of friends and a bunch of us ordered two bowls, hoping to bring home some leftovers for lunch. When we asked for to-go boxes, the waitress flipped out and told us they do not provided to-go boxes. When we tried asking questions to understand why not, she started accusing us of "ganging up on her", left us and brought the manager. The manager was one of the rudest persons I have had the displeasure of interacting with in my whole life. Basically, she said that there was a sign indicating that they did not give to-go boxes and that it was our fault for not knowing. When one of us suggested that we had not had a chance to see the sign as the waitress asked us how many bowls we wanted while we were stil sitted at the table, she completely dismissed us, said that was the rule and she was not going to try to accomodate our needs in any way. The most amazing part is that when we were paying she started yelling at everyone to leave tips to the staff!!!! I could not believe that after all of this she still had the guts to yell at us and demand a tip!!!! Needless to say I will NEVER go back to this horrible place!! And I should add that this experience was so horible that it compelled me to come back home and write my first restaurant review ever to try and prevent people from going through the same awful experience my friends and I went through tonight!
Bali Hai at 9th Street. I recently ate at Bali Hai on 9th Street. I ordered take out. I signed my sales slip struck thru the tip and wrote down the balance. Later when I checked my bank statement, I noticed the amount was more. I went back to the Restaurant and requested my receipt (She doesnt give you one when you check out). Before I could get in the door good the owner stated that "you have been overcharged" that is why you are back. She knew that she had ripped me off. Her excuse was "your bank did that". I contacted my bank and they stated the Restaurant inputs all amounts. So she lied. Buyer Beware: This restaurant is adding more to your credit and debit cards. They are ripping customers off. She told me I would see a credit in a few days but I am going to turn this Restaurant into the Attorney General Office.
terrible restaraunt overpriced, unfriendly staff, cheap (as in, a rip off).. Oh. My God. This place was terrible! I went, despite the terrible reviews on here, with my family because it was someone's birthday, and they wanted to try it, and we thought it couldn't be that bad. First off, the wait-staff is/ was horrible. The waitress was completely unpleasant, obviously unhappy to have to work, and really quite rude. She answered our questions, but acted as if it wasn't her job. Two of our guests were vegan, and wanted to know the ingredients in the noodles. When we asked if they were rice noodles or egg, she said "I don't know." We had to ask her to please check the ingredients, and she said "are you serious?" From there, it just got worse. Their kids menu (she said) was only for 5 and under, and I honestly didn't even see evidence of a kids menu. We asked if they had one, and she said "how old is she?" and we said 7. She said "she will have to order from the regular menu." We asked if there was a fee for sharing/splitting meals/ sharing plates, because we wanted to just get a variety of different stir fry's (spicy, vegan, regular, etc) and all dig in, and to share with the child, who is very small for her age, and the waitress said - NO sharing. Also, they don't offer appetizers or to go boxes, and are really odd about refilling your drink and will just ignore you if you ask for refills. This wasn't on a busy night even, it was a Wednesday at 6:30, there were a few other people but not many. While the meal was good, it is only just stir fry, (three adults and one small 7 year old- payed $40 just for stir fry and waters, which seemed a little high) and I felt pretty grossed out by the fact that the waitress would wipe her sweat off her face or forehead and then pick up people's food and carry it to them. The restroom was terrible, there were not any paper towels or evidence there had ever been any (not even an empty roll in the dispenser) and the floor was filthy. If you go, don't say I didn't warn you.
A Complete Rip-Off. I ate at Bali Hai and was unfortunately very disappointed. While the food was OK, the service was terrible and the restaurant policies are quite ridiculous. We were unable to share a meal and on top of that were unable to take any of our leftovers home. When I asked the waitress for a to go box her response was "we can't do that". When I went to pay the check, I saw that there were styrofoam boxes behind the counter. I asked for a to go box again, and the answer was no. So not only was I unable to take home my leftovers that were paid for; the excess food was just wasted (and had we been able to share it probably wouldn't have been a problem). I suggested that if they wanted return customers that they should reconsider changing their policy. The waitress responded "well, it's not my fault". All in all, I'll never be back.
Great food, especially you're on a budget. The food here has the spicy asian flair that's hard to come by in Durham. My girlfriend and I love asian food of all sorts and since we are usually watching our discretionary spending we often find our selves at Bali hai. The food is great and you get a lot of it (well, only if you know how to pack the food in right). It's a busy place on the weekends so I was a little hesitant to eating there on a Saturday night when my family came in from out of state (a party of 12). But, the service was good and everyone loved the food. So all in all if you want an exquisite atmosphere and service, go else where. But if you want great asian food for cheap this is it.
Bali Hai, once great, now horrible.. This past weekend my husband, our toddler son, and I had an awful experience at Bali-Hai in Durham. My husband and I had been their before, a few years ago, and we really liked the food and the concept. Our initial experience with Bali-Hai was in their original store, a hole in the wall in Raleigh, many years ago. I remember it being a rundown little joint on Six Forks Road, but the food was awesome! The jest- you pile bowls up with fresh veggies and meat and they stir fry it on a huge grill where they season your dishes with wonderful house sauces, as spicy or mild as you choose. During our experience this weekend, I was literally shock at how downhill they have gone. Upon entering the ninth street store, we immediately noticed the large carpet stains that greet you almost immediately at the front door. The server sat us and handed us menus. I proceeded to order one of the six or so appetizers listed and was informed that they no longer sold appetizers. The server explained that he had no idea why they were still presenting a menu in which half the items were unavailable. We ordered our entrees and the food wasn?t bad, but not as great as I remembered in past years. After our meal I asked for a to go box for my son, as he had not touch his meal due to a large smoothie an hour prior. The server informed me that the owners would not permit him to give out to go boxes. He suggested I ask, but I refused- clearly these were not reasonable people. We were basically forced to pay for my son?s entree and we were not allowed to take any of it with us. While we waited for the check I took my son to the restroom and it was disgusting. If I had gone into it prior to ordering, I would have left immediately. It was not the simple matter of someone not flushing; someone had failed to clean it period. Please don?t go here until the owner?s do their part to clean up their act and service.
Horrible experience, Extremely mean owner, non-consistant food!!!!!!!. My boyfriend and I are regular customers of Bali Hai restaurant in Durham since 2006. Because we live very close to Duke, we usually go there to eat twice a week. But recently we had several really bad experiences with them, especially with the owner. One time, they gave us the wrong tickets and ended up charging us extra $6. I was surprised when I was paying for the bill and asked the owner to check on it. At first her attitude was very rude and acted like "What are you talking about? These are what you ordered!" Then the waitress came to us and told her that the tickets were wrong. She immediately switched her anger towards the waitress and scolded her (poor waitress! It was not her fault at all. It was another waitress who gave us the wrong tickets). Anyway, we paid our bill and left the place. However, the next day, my boyfriend found out that for some reason they charged an extra 10% to our bill in addition to the 18% tip we put on the receipt. We were really mad and almost decided to call them up to ask. But since this is the only place where we can get really spicy food, my boyfriend convinced me not to say anything. We stopped going there for a while and recently we decided to give it a try again. But, unfortunately another even more terrible incident just happened today. I will continue the story in another review due to the word limit here.
OK food, friendly and helpful servers, but not happy with owners.
A friendly server seated us and passed menus. However, the owner was extremely rude and asked us to hurry up as she was taking our order. Granted, we came in 20 minutes before closing, however, the owner nor the server mentioned this earlier. If the lack of time was an issue, they should have told us so. I then asked her if a drink was included in the price, to which she answered of course not, no restaurant ever does that (or words to that effect). I was taken back by her abruptness.
I headed over to the sideboard to select my food. As I was picking out the beef, the owner falsely accused me of handling food with my hands and asked me to cease. I told her I had not done so. She did not apologize. I continued selecting my food, but as I got to the vegetables, the owner started hurrying us and servers came to begin removing the food trays.
The cooking was average. The beef was overcooked and the steamed rice was cold. I had to ask for another bowl of rice, but the replacement was no better.
When my companions finished their meal, the owner immediately presented all the checks even though I was still eating. My companions paid and got change. I finally finished my meal and left money on the table. As we walked out, I overheard the owner asking did he pay? to the server. I saw him walk quickly to our table to count the monies when we were outside.
Overall, the food was average though the servers were friendly and helpful. However, the treatment I got from the owners was one of the worst experiences Ive ever had in a restaurant. Personally, I will never go back to Bali Hai again. I recommend people go well ahead of closing time to avoid being rushed.
