Very good resturant – My family and I eat at Sage a lot. I am a traveler for work and eat an average of 15 meals per week out for during the course of a work week. When I come home and we decide to eat out, which is at least twice per week we always pick Sage as one of the places to visit.
Reason is, the food is always fresh, good and served to any request we make. I have yet in the 5 years going there to have anyone wait on me that was not knowledgeable in the foods they serve and attentive. Even when they are busy, they have a way of making you feel like you belong.
Okay food, unprovaked & rude service – My wife and I went there on a Friday night for dinner. The waiter was great, we ordered, the food took 45 minutes to come out, which is little long, but not to bad. The food was okay, and we were polite to all. We were blown away, when after we paid our bill, which took 15 minutes to get and another 15 minutes for the waiter to pick up from our table [little long?], a female staff approached us and politely asked "have you paid your bill yet?" and we responded "yes we have", and she said with a little attitude "I probably shouldn't say this, but we have people waiting, so could you........ that's all I can say" and slaps her hands together and walks away. It was the most insulting and rude comment either myself or my wife have ever herd when dinning, ever. We paid $52 for one glass of wine, one beer, and two simple meals with no sides. Needless to say we will not return, and my wife just heard from a colleague of her's, that they had a difficult time there as well.
Vegetarian Menu – In the same shopping center as Margaret's Cantina. All vegetarian menu. Very small restaurant, but a cute and cozy place.
Sage Cafe is the BEST! – Sage Cafe is one of the best local vegetarian restaurants we have found recently. The food is exquisite, the atmosphere is down home, and the staff is all friendly and inviting. We have not had a single negative experience in the 20 + times we have been there, and will go back continually! The prices are about like anywhere else, and it is one place where we, as vegetarians, can go and not have to explain exactly what we don't want in our food. One improvement would be to use cheese that is made with vegetable rennet, rather than "cultures" or "enzymes"...specifically use "vegetable rennet". That would make our dining experience a much fuller one...because then we could eat the cheese dishes...like their incredible veggie lasagna! They have a recipe book for sale that is amazing as well! Don't miss it!
Avoid...perhaps too overrated – I went to Sage with my family last week, after having heard rave reviews (from my wife included). What I found there was quite a surpise.
#1. Food (eggplant + kabobs) was nothing great - sweetish, much to my dislike. I'm not sure how persian this food is, except that it had lentil.
#2. Service was bad. The waitress was so impatient, she actually tried to take my wife's plate away even while there was substantial food left, and she was working on it slowly. This happened not once, but twice. It didn't seem like she was interested in really relaxing in that place. And it was not even close to closing time.
#3. Expensive compared to other places, even more unjustified considering #1, 2.
I for one am not going to revisit this place anytime in the near future.
Incredible! – This place is amazing. I'm by far a meat lover and must admit the first time I tried Sage I was very hessitant! However, they have managed to impress me with every single thing i have ordered so far. I have been back on a regular basis since my first visit. The osh is very very tasty and their soy chicken cutlets are out of this world. Service is always wonderful in this hidden wonder. I highly recommend Sage as one of my new favorite restaurants in town. Yeah it's a little pricey, but you can taste the freshness of their ingredients in every bite and to me that's worth it.
Best Vegetarian Around! – Sage features some of the most unique food around. All of their food is Mediterranean/Middle Eastern and either vegan or vegetarian. The mainstays such as the eggplant paradise (an eggplant stew with rice) and veggetable kabobs are delicious, as are all the soups, salads, and specials. The veggie burger is always excellent. Their house salad dressing in tofu or regular is the best around and available in bottles. The servers are always friendly and the quaint small atmosphere is charming. Sage is one of the best hidden treasures in Chapel Hill!
