The Scene – Don't let general manager and chef Yung Cu's Vietnamese heritage fool you--he has been rolling, stuffing and slicing sushi for more than 10 years with the best of them, the past several years at Durham favorite Shiki Sushi. The restaurant's decor feels cold and cafeteria-like, but the sushi is worth the chill. – – The Food – All tables, plus those waiting for takeout, receive complimentary edamame (steamed soy beans) before the meal. For an appetizer, start with the melt-in-your-mouth beef tataki. Special Akashi rolls blend traditional with modern--eel with…

Akashi is our new fave sushi restaurant in the area. The sushi never fails to satisfy and the you can't beat the prices. Try the tuna jaw appetizer...you won't be disappointed!!

They food is fantastic and cheap. Also they are usually pretty fast even at lunch when they are super busy. The sushi chef's are super nice and we love sitting at the sushi bar and chatting with them.
- Pros: Cheap and Fast, Excellent Sushi!
- Cons: Closed Sundays, Strange Location
Best sushi in Triangle - I kid you not

This is admittedly almost the same review that I entered on Akashi's other Citysearch entry. I did want to point out that when you see overwhelming 5 star reviews with multiple paragraphs of praise and then just a few people with vague criticisms who give 1 stars, hopefully you can draw the correct conclusion as to which to trust. Maybe it's the competition spouting off jealously, maybe it's somebody who feels the need to be a contrarian, who knows, who cares. :)
So I'll keep it brief here - I've eaten sushi all over Asia, big cities in this country etc. This place surprisingly rivals some of the best ones I've ever been to. Don't get me wrong, of course Akashi doesn't have the super high-end ingredients and class of a place like Osho in the Bay Area, but then again, you're not paying a fortune either. The half off sushi really is half off, no silly "equal or lesser value" gimmicks. The chef is the guy who made nearby Shiki Sushi famous, this is his new place and if you dare to compare, you'll see why people are raving. Talk to him a little and you'll see just how dedicated he is to his craft. If you are a real sake fan, ask for the imported sakes which are not on the menu.
The only cons are just the fact that it's in a pretty run down strip mall, and the decor is fairly plain. (They've spruced it up a lot recently, so the bright cafeteria lights and cheap chairs etc. are thankfully gone.) I come here for the excellent food, friendly service, and convenient 54/55 location. If you want fancy atmosphere, go to Shiki. If you want the best sushi in the Triangle at unbelievably cheap prices, you owe it to yourself to try Akashi.
- Pros: Outstanding food, service, and amazingly cheap price
- Cons: Location in run down strip mall, so-so decor
