In Short
Seemingly typical neighborhood bar, with splashes of surprise--restored church pews and European posters. A welcoming bar and intimate patio offer a setting that makes the locals and groups regulars. The menu's affordable choices include favorites like spinach-artichoke dip and beer-battered fish tacos. French fry connoisseurs can enjoy their geographical pick--(English) chips, (French) steak frites or (French-Canadian) poutine, which is topped with gravy and cheese. Take time experimenting with the vast variety of beers.

The noise level in the restaurant/bar was unbearable; I could not hear the hostess. We asked to dine on the patio and, unfortunately, ended up next to a table with smokers. My French-style mussels were a little salty but good (except for 3 questionable ones that I tossed out). The sliced bread for dipping was mediocre in taste and texture. The mussels were served with a very tasty side of thin, seasoned fries. Another person ordered fish and chips, which came with fried pickles. He asked if they were served with English-style chips; the answer was no, just regular thin, seasoned fries. The fish was good but the batter had absorbed a lot of oil, as though the oil was not hot enough during cooking. The third person in our party ordered the burger and fries which was good. The prices were reasonable and we will likely go back, but not anytime soon. The overall experience was just ok, not bad.

I've had the opportunity to eat at Milltown 5 or 6 times for lunch and dinner and the restaurant delivers. There's a large, lit patio for outdoor eating or you can sit inside the dimly lit dining room. There's a large bar in the corner and a very, large beer menu for beer-lovers. The menu is a bit short, about 10 appetizers (sausages with pretzel bread), 10 sandwiches and some full meals. The frites are decent but a bit soggy as mentioned in other reviews. My favorite is the prime rib sandwich, a large portion of meat served in a french roll with au jus. They also have a Saturday brunch which I haven't tried yet. Servers are polite and prompt, no issues here. While Milltown could be a bit more consistent with its food and have a broader menu, I like the concept and ambiance of having an interesting cafe in Carrboro that you can pop into to grab a bite or brew. Nice job, I hope the owners improve on the concept over time.

This is my new place to go for a number of reasons.. 1) No smoking inside! 2) Lots of great beer 3) A late nite menu that destroys all other late night food around. 4) Great food in general. I highly recommend this place. Service is good now since they worked out the kinks. The other cool part is the outdoor patio. The only drawback I can think of is parking.

The Details on Mill Town

Know Before You Go:

Late night munchies? That's okay, but the menu is limited after 10:30pm; the plus side is that they serve food until closing, 2am.

Parking:

There is a building in between the bar itself and the parking lot; many patrons use the municipal lot nearby but the bar does have its own free parking.

Look Good:

Know your beers so you can choose wisely; you have a choice of 150.
