Durham >Melting Pot Restaurant
What an awesome date place!.
I have been here a few times with some friends for Thursdays ladies nights. They also have a drop-in style childcare in the same building run by the same owners that my kids love going to. I find it real convenient and more reliable than a sitter. Although I have been here more times with my friends I have to say this is the BEST date place! My husband and I have come here for those special occasions, our anniversary & birthdays, but you should make a special 'date' night and do the Lovers Lane package! The 'Lovers Lane area' are these cool booths that have privacy curtains. You feel like you are the only ones there... great touch!
The food is great quality and I think it is silly the complaints for 'cooking your own food'. We always do the Big Night Out (4 courses): Cheese, Salad, Entree, Dessert, you are only "cooking" the entree yourself. The server prepares for you one of the cheeses you select and you get a bunch of great breads and veggies/apples to dip in it. The server then brings you the salad (I love the house). Then the new pot comes out for the entree. The entree may look small (because it is a bunch of uncooked pieces of meats) on the large platter, but it is a lot of food. I think the entree part of the meal is when you have the time to actually chat with your 'date'. Each item takes a minute or so to cook and then you get to dip it into a huge selection of sauces! Lastly is the dessert and my favorite part. I have never had a bad dessert... you pick one of the chocolate combinations and then a plate of 'dippers' comes out to dunk in the chocolate! If you truly want a unique experience go here, if you are worried about cooking your own food... go to Ruth's Chris.
Great experience. I've been here 2 or 3 times for special dates. Budget lots of time to enjoy and fondue all the courses! The staff is older and more mature than most chain type places. Nice wine list too.
MELTING IS BESt RESTRAUNT IN DURHAM NC. THE MELTINGpot IS GREat I love it I have been there so many times sence it have opened with my wife and we love it you need 2 try it you will not be disappointed so please try it once you will just love it
Pay $$$$ to cook your own food. Went w. my husband for an anniversary celebration. We sat in Lover's Lane which was awesome but wow...you pay a lot of money for a lot of chunks of food that you cook and season and sauce up yourself. I realize it's a fondue place and maybe it's fun with a group of NON-hungry buddies but to take 20 minutes explaining how long YOU need to cook the pork, chicken, shrimp and beef? Really? Novelty wore off after the bread and the melted cheese. I recommend restaurants where someone cooks the food for you.
Great experience, great service.
Recently dined there with wife. Server was Tony. Very helpful, very nice, very conversational. Even when we asked him something he wasn't quite sure of, he promptly found the answer. Very helpful with wine selection. We wanted a wine for dinner and his selection was perfect. We ordered a port for dessert and, again, it was perfect. On top of that, his selections - from dinner to drinks - weren't the most expensive suggestions (as we've run into in the past). He explained to us that cost of wine doesn't mean it's the best, and he was right. Can only assume that most of the staff is that helpful.
Great atmosphere, romantic, relaxing, and well worth the money and time spent. Looking forward to our next visit.
Fun Dining Experience. I have been to the MeltingPot multiple times and have enjoyed every experience! I went to the Durham location last Saturday with my husband for his birthday. The host staff was wonderful, we were promptly seated with a smile. Our waitress was informative, sweet and truly seemed to enjoy waiting on us. We had the Big Night Out with Cheddar cheese and the flaming turtle for chocolate. The food was great, but it does take 2 hours to have all four courses so make sure you give ample time for dinner. Overall food, and service was tops and we enjoyed our night.
Waitstaff makes the difference. I agree with the previous reviewer about the waitstaff. We sat in the "lovers lane" section and our waitress was bad. I could hear other employees and they were great. It started off poorly as the waitress took 20 minutes to even come to our table. She almost seemed like she didn't know how to use the equipment. My companion was given the wrong salad and it took her awhile to get a new one. However, the new one had dressing on it and she clearly asked for dressing on the side. The waitress then said that the kitchen staff doesn't speak great English so they can't put dressing on the side. Have you ever heard anything so crazy. When we got the chocolate, there was a cherry stem in there. Did we get a used one? However, we talked to the owner after the meal and he did a VERY good job of handling it. He was shocked to hear our claims but verified it with her. He was awesome and we really appreciate that. The food--as always--was delicious. It's a place to definitely check out but I hope you get a good waiter/waitress.
Ask for a good server when making a reservation.
I have dined the MeltingPot restaurants in Raleigh and Myrtle Beach. I was excited to see one open closer to my home in Durham. It is expensive, but worth the experience. The food is great, the atmosphere is relaxing, romantic and fun. We sat in Lovers Lane, a table for 2 with a privacy curtain.
The one slightly odd part of our evening was that our service was a bit off. Our waitress was rather overenthusiastic and almost hyper when explaining the menu to us, but then repeatedly made jokes about wanting to quit her job throughout the evening because of the owner. We asked for a wine recommendation, but she knew little about the wine selection. She was a capable server and very helpful, but her comments to us were a bit bizarre.
We enjoyed our meal, I just think that a restaurant that expensive, should be a little more selective when hiring servers.
