Durham >Blu Seafood & Bar
I am very impressed.. I am very impressed. My wife and I ate dinner here the other night. The fish seviche was perfect, and the oysters carribe were outstanding. Our server was very courteous & knowledgeable. I'm excited to come back and try some of their special events some time.
Frequent business traveler to the triangle I had heard a lot of pros and cons about Blu. Went with friends and reservations. We were seated quickly - and quickly forgotten. the wait staff didnt seem to know their own menu or the specials. After 30 minutes half of us had a drink (the non-alcoholic drinks). an hour in there was still no food or even bread. There did appear to be a manager circling through barking some orders but this did not improve anything.
when the food finally came (65 minuted for a salad) is was nothing to get excited about. One person did have a whole fish that was good. the rest was very uninspired and didnt live up to the billing. We didnt dare stay for coffee of dessert. overall seems like a restaurant that has run low on enthusiasm. Better off at Vin Rouge or Metro 8
Great experience at Blu.
While I am a lifelong Durham resident, I ventured to Blu for the first time this week. We were greeted at the door, given a choice of indoor or outdoor seating, and welcomed by an attentive waitress. The specials were explained in detail and drinks/food arrived promptly. The scallop dish was truly wonderful as was the crab appetizer.
We will be back for fresh, innovative food at Blu.
Superior seafood. great food. staff quite adept. this is a must go for seafood lovers. great ceviche, oysters and fish
Great food, manager screaming at staff. The food was great, however, the manager was screaming loudly at a waitress in the dining room. inappropriate handling, ruined an $80.00 meal. Having waited tables for years, I felt bad for the staff. Making a waitress cry in view of guests is uncalled for. I will never return. the food was great though. sad.
In no way do I want to demean this place, but for what it cost, the service and food could have been better. Oh, did I mention there were ants on the walls by the windows! When we asked to be reseated they didnt offer consolation like free dessert or something to make up for the ants like other places would have.
A friend and I thought this new joint would be fancy but we didnt see a single person in formal wear! Also, if you are going to be named "Blu" which sounds sophisticated, then you shouldnt look like a crabshack! Thanks, but that was a one time deal for us!
I'm addicted!. I agree with kas23 that this is one of the best restaurants in town. I have been coming to Blu regularly for over a year now. I have always had great food and attentive and friendly service. The wine dinners are a great deal and so much fun! I also love how the menu changes a little bit every so often. It keeps it fresh and interesteing!
Best Seafood in the Triangle. I am very surprised to read about the experience in the previous review. My wife and I have been eating at Blu at least once a week since the restaurant opened 2 years ago. We have never been treated with anything less than the utmost courtesy and respect and I've never witnessed the general manager, chef/owner, or staff being anything less than professional and accommodating to the customers. In addition, both the owner and general manager have gone above and beyond in their support of two charities I work with: the Ronald McDonald House of Durham and the United Way. It’s unfortunate to read about this, but based on my experience this would seem to be a blip on the radar of an otherwise very professional restaurant and I hope it would not dissuade folks from trying what my wife and I believe to be the best seafood restaurant (if not best restaurant period) in the Triangle.
tasty fish and strong cocktails.
There are only a couple fish entrees I can eat here because of a shellfish allergy, but they are always some of the best fish in town. I usually get a trout or salmon dish and the preparation changes every month, so it stays interesting. They use a lot of seasonal vegetables and the portions are a good size.
Try to sit in the white glassed-in room, which is more romantic and quieter. Service sometimes takes longer than what I consider normal for food, but drinks are fast. They have great foccacia, but half the time our waiter has forgotten to bring it and can be hard to track down.
Blu has a tempting list of wines by the glass, and if you order just one cocktail you will be stumbling out the door - they are that strong. My favorite drink there is the Bourbon Sidecar. I always have a great time at Blu, even without being able to enjoy the oysters or crab.
sad. After eating at blu seafood several times with generally promising meals, it was already clear service was so so and the food was slow to arrive - but nothiing prepared my party for the latest encounter. We went on "crab night "early in the evening. We were told they were already out of some crab dishes. We were not however, told any of the crab specials without asking. We ordered appetizers and entrees. After 55minutes we remained without any food not even soup or salads, while tables that arrived well after us were well into their meals. We inquired and were told things were slow and other tables had also complained. Still no food arrived. We decided to cut our losses and leave. upon leaving the owner Eryk chased us out the door announcing we were stealing from him and that he was calling the police. We waited for him to follow through, and of course, he came back and told us he was too busy and we needed to " get out". I waited tables through college and have dined all over this country and many other countries both developed and undeveloped and have never encountered anything so pathetic. The food may have promise but they dont seem to recognize that service is a critical component to a dining experience. Stay away or eat before you go.
