When I travel to NC to visit my extended family I refuse to go home until I have had at least one meal at the Village Diner. The fried chicken is perfect; really crispy outside, moist and full of flavor inside. The barbecue is to die for and, even though I pleaded, no one is giving up the recipe for one of the best eastern Carolina barbecue sauces ever! The greens are smokey and yummy and I'm always tempted to stuff my purse with extra hush puppies just for the road. These folks really know how to do it, from the plastic pitcher of sweet tea on the table to the banana pudding. This is the best old-timey North Carolina food I've found!

A staff member at the visitor's center recommended a couple places to us and we decided to go with this one. The food was excellent, some of the best fried chicken I have eaten. The hushpuppies were good and the banana pudding was superb. This is where the locals seem to go, which is usually the best place in town, both for food and price. It is a seat yourself kind of place, with a buffet or order off the menu. If you don't usually pick the buffet, you should make an exception for this place!
- Pros: great food, inexpensive, good service
