Allen & Sons is the pride of carolina, as beloved a barbecue as there is in the state -- which is saying something. As at all carolina barbeces, pulled pork is the star of the show, smoldered many hours over ember pits. Get there early; this is a meat you need to eat when it's fresh.
Good Southern Barbeque. The barbeque was outstanding along with the cole slaw and hushpuppies!!!!!
Delicious barbecue served Southern-style..
If you park in the back of the gravel lot, you'll see the pit. It's plain, but the chimneys mean business. Inside, the plastic tablecloths have a red gingham design. Women with beehive hairdos and construction workers sit on the ladder-back chairs, smoking and eating. The food is as honest and unadorned as the decor, and it's almost perfect. Onion rings are golden, hushpuppies are crispy and the mayonnaise-based cole slaw is just sweet enough.
User review by phoebes. The bbq was very greasy, the service was terrible and the bananna pudding was grey!
Fantastic!. Quite simply, the best barbecue I have ever eaten. They only use pork shoulder and the meat is of much higher quality than other BBQ joints. The decor is strictly no frills, but that adds to the atmosphere. My only complaint is that they allow smoking in the dining room.
Good Pig, Bad Everything Else. It's hard to find much better barbeque if you're just looking for meat, but the sides are less than great. Oil and grease takes the place of flavor, and the barbeque portions are small, considering the price. Atmosphere is good if you're looking for something off the beaten path, but service follows suit...so don't be in a hurry, especially during busy hours.
