Tips for Performance Bicycle Shop

Actually improved customer service recently!. Service has improved IMO since the move from Carrboro. I brought in a person looking for the loss leader sale bike. It was in stock and my friend was tickled to have a nice, not excellent, road bike for $400.

I rode in on my Giant Lite, an eBike which was now a 3 speed hub instead of 4! This was near closing on a Sat and I was advised to bring it back in the morning when a more experienced mechanic would be on staff. Came back before church Sunday and the experienced mechanic and the less experienced one worked for at least 20min and fixed it for the estimate they gave of adjusting the gearing of $10!

My daughter was with me and I remarked how they worked in front of us, talked us through what they were doing, had us test the bike. All of which led to us purchasing a rack and other chain lube there as well!

One thing I really miss is that "back room full of discounted goods" in the old Carrboro store!

One other time another young sales staffer mentioned after I asked about replacement pads for my Gyro helment that "there's only a 3 yr warranty on them, so there are no replacement pads for a 5yr old helment, might as well buy a new one". That was an unfortunate comment and the only reason I'm not giving Performance Bicycle of Chapel Hill 5 stars!

Bad customer service. I went to Performance in the Trader Joe's parking lot in Chapel Hill with my girlfriend to help her pick out a bike on a budget from their end of the year sales. As soon as we explained that we were looking for a road bike for a beginner for under 500 dollars they first showed us one for 1200 dollars and then quickly lost interest in helping us altogether. When I used their very easy to navigate website (that also has some amazing deals on it currently) to find three choices they had me wait for no less than 25 minutes while they helped other customers and eventually took the 12 seconds it would have taken initially to check and tell me they were out of stock, but they could check the other stores in the area and see if they had anything we wanted. Another 25 minutes go by-3 of which were spent looking for the bike and the other 22 were spent avoiding eye contact and checking out other customers that didn't need help with their purchases... So what could have been a half hour trip to the store turned into a nearly 2 hour ordeal for nothing. The moral of the story is that if you know exactly what you want, and can find it yourself then this is a great place. If you need someone to help you spend the 500 or so dollars you had planned on giving them then go somewhere else with better customer support.

Terrible!. This bike shop is awful. I brought my bike in with rusty breaks, and they broke the bolt as they were trying to loosen it. There were no offers to replace the bolt. Their comments on this issue were as follows:

1. You should be glad it broke; riding a bike with rusty brakes is dangerous. You didn't want it to break while you were riding.

2. You should just get a new bike, this one is too cheap to fix.

The "best they could do" was refer me to other shops in the area, which might have replacement parts. I asked if I could leave the bike at the shop and pick it up later in the week, since I live up by Weaver Dairy, and was not about to ride a bike with no brakes four miles home. They said no. Absolutely terrible bike shop.

The scent of vulcanized rubber meets the aroma of stretchy, breathable lycra at this two-wheeler dealer.. In Short
It doesn't matter if you're the casual touring type or the mud-caked, gritty trail rider. If you're looking for equipment for your velocipede, Performance has it. From the single-gear beach cruiser to the hi-tech, rock-hopping mountain bike, if you can say the name, they've got the frame. Their Carrboro location features the latest in clothing, shoes, helmets, accessories and even racks to carry your gear.

Was once a good place. Brought a bike in for an overhaul, what a mistake. It was one week over due then when I picked it up my cables were still not replaced. They had worn to the point of snapping but were overlooked by the tech, how he missed it I don't know. Maybe they didn't do what was asked of them.

Their bike selection has dropped and is no longer as diverse as it was.

Good Products, Bad Staff. Very nice selection of bikes. Great location. Staff are pretty arogant, though, and not too bright.
