I saw Meredith-Gray for three years at
the Beehive. She's the most amazing haircutter I've ever had-- extraordinarily talented, meticulous, and professional.
I have curly, difficult hair, and through every cut she was patient, careful, and made me look great. I'd always been a little iffy about my curly hair until Meredith-Gray began cutting it. Now it looks fabulous and I consider it a key part of me. She's also a very careful listener-- she'll ask questions until she understands precisely want you want. I've lived seven different cities all over the world, and Meredith-Gray is the best haircutter I've ever had. I'd seriously consider flying to Seattle just to have her cut my hair.
She's also a fabulous colorist. She did my highlights for three years and also implemented my first foray into pink. All excellent and perfectly executed.
won't be going back..
Unfortunately, my first and only experience with the Beehive was negative and costly. I told Tonya that I wanted my hair to be somewhere between my shoulders and my chin (it was long) but said I trusted her with the length. She cut it just below my shoulders, and when I tried to fix it at home I didn't like it (it looked like a shelf across the back). I made another appointment immediately to ask her to take it shorter like I originally wanted, but when I showed up for my appointment she and Meg (the receptionist, who had previously been friendly) were standing at the reception desk just staring at me. No greeting, no smile, nothing from either of them. Tonya finally asked what I needed, and I explained. She said, "So you want a whole new haircut," and then proceeded to do what I asked. Afterward, Meg asked if she should charge me for a full haircut, and Tonya sighed, said, "Well, that's what it was," and then asked me, "What do YOU think you should pay?" I said that I would pay whatever she thought was fair, and after some long, awkward silence from both of them, she finally said I should pay for half of a haircut.
I've never before been charged for someone to go back and "fix" a haircut I wasn't happy with, but I understand if that's The Beehive's policy. What I don't understand is why Tonya didn't say that up front, rather than trying to make me feel as uncomfortable as possible and manipulate me into offering to pay for a whole new haircut. Be professional, please, and don't try to guilt your clients into paying for fixing a less-than-great haircut. Just state what your policy is and allow the client to decide what they want.
Bottom line: this haircut cost me $100. The worst part is that, while Tonya gave me the length I wanted, she also gave me ridiculously short layers which have ensured months of growing out a very awkward haircut. Needless to say, I will not be going back to The Beehive, and hope that they make their policies clearer for clients in the future.
After 3 years of searching... I finally found my salon/stylist!.
I moved to Chapel Hill from Los Angeles about 3 years ago. Even after doing exhaustive searching, traveling to Raleigh and the outer limits of the Triangle, I still had ZERO luck with finding a hair salon or stylist that I'm completely happy with. Wouldn't you know it, the place I was looking for was right around the corner. The Beehive is a fabulous salon and Meridith Grey is... just perfect.
The salon is conveniently located in downtown Carrboro, has a cute retro-50's/60's feel and just has a great feel (they will be tripling their salon space in the next few months!). Meridith is a wealth of knowledge, extremely skilled and just an amazing stylist. She took the time to talk with me, offer her own ideas and really understand what she was going to do with my hair before she did it. And did it she has! My hair hasn't looked this great since I lived in California!!
Thanks Meridith! Thanks Beehive! You have a new, dedicated and VERY HAPPY new customer in me!! :)
Best salon I have ever been to. period.. This salon is AMAZING. Meridith Grey is the best stylist I have ever been to and I can honestly say this is the first haircut in many years that I LOVED. She made me look great which makes me feel great, and shes so personable. Highly highly highly recommend.
Best Hair in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I searched for years (literally) for a great hair stylist and finally found Diane at the Beehive. She spent a lot of time with me, listened to my ideas and told me her ideas. I am a mother of 2 young kids who wanted an easy but edgy style. She gave me a cute medium-length hair cut at first and then we grew it out to a longer shag, which looks sort of rock and roll-ish and is very easy. It also is always fun to go in because everyone who works there is nice and has fun conversations. I highly recommend the Beehive!
I liked my hair...but did not love it. Let me start off by saying that the service was AMAZING!!! The woman who cut my hair (sorry I cannot remember her name) spent a long time with me. She was super nice and chatty and I really liked her. Unfortunately, I did not like my hair, though the damage was not too severe. She did not cut my hair like I wanted, but I also did not come in with a picture, just a verbal description. I also felt like I had too much product in my hair when I left. The salon could do more to create more of a peaceful atmosphere....some nice music would be good. Not the worst experience, not the best either.
A Neighborhood Favorite. Cute salon, fun environment, reasonably priced, easy to tack on a quick trip to Weaver Street Market, which is just across the street. Tonya is a good stylist and is not afraid to be honest if you're asking for something unflattering or that won't work for you. She helped me get through the growing-out phase really painlessly. Also cut my teenaged son's hair -- it looked adorable and he was very happy with it! The only negative for me has been scheduling problems, mostly due to unexpected circumstances on the stylist's end and trouble rescheduling canceled appointments. Saturday slots can be hard to get, so schedule well in advance.
Best Haircuts!. I can't speak highly enough about the Beehive or my stylist Meredith. I initially tried the salon (and Meredith) on the recommendation of other fine haired clients on this website and was just as impressed. Every time I get a haircut from her I get comments, and in fact most of my friends now go to her after asking where I get mine cut. I love her so much that even though I've recently moved to Rocky Mount (about an hour and a half from Carrboro) I still travel all the way back just to have her cut my hair! The salon itself is also really cute. Its small and trendy but really relaxed and unpretentious. Although I've never gone to any of the other stylists, I've never seen anyone leave with a bad haircut. Price wise they are pretty reasonable, my hair usually costs $40 and its worth it to be able to sit down say "do whatever you want with my hair" (which I often do) and know that its going to look great!
The Bee's Knees. I highly recommend this salon. These girls know what they are doing. I have actually been to all three stylists and while they are different in technique they are all equally great. I have referred many friends and they have all been as pleased with the results as I have. Diane, Meredith and Tonya have all taken the time to consult with me and answer any questions regarding what would be best for my hair type. The best thing is they aren't afraid to tell you what isn't a good look for you. The atmosphere is so relaxed yet fun at the same time. It is a small salon but it only adds to that feeling of comradeship. The decor is awesome too. One simple review is not enough to express how happy I am to have found this little gem of a salon.
for fine haired girls. I have very fine and super straight hair and I finally found a stylist with my hair type! Ask for Meredith. She gave me a realistic cut that i can style myself in a few minutes. I have been getting compliments from everyone. It makes such a difference to find a stylist who actually lives with your hair type. She kicks butt!
