Out of BUSINESS THE LAST TIME I WAS THERE IN THE ALLEY. The Chapel Hill Rathskeller was OUT OF BUSINESS the last time I took a walk by their location in the Alley.

not a good experience. My husband and I ate here when we first moved to the area in November. We had a good experience , the food was good and the service was friendly. We had family visiting from Charlotte and we took them to Rathskeller. We were seated in a back room(way back) even though as we walked through the front room was not full. The room we were in was decorated like a circus and was very stuffy(no air). This room felt unsafe to me. If there was a fire I don't know if we would have got out. The food took a very long time and was not good at all. We were given our meals at different times and when we did get our meals we were given peas because they did not have french fries. It was a strange combo with our meals. I would have prefered the waiter to give us an option. Instead they gave us peas with our meal and we found out when the food came to the table. I don't know if it was an off day but, unfortunately I will not go back. Just for the record, I am not a picky person and I do have a tolerence for mistakes. However, I would be concerned I would have the same experience. With so many good places to eat in the area , why would I take a chance and go back?

Where dining in a cave is ultracool for college kids.. In Short
Dark and cavernous in one room, bright and graffiti-scribbled in another, this is where Carolina freshmen take visiting parents for dinner--or where alumni reunite to rehash old times. Service is as traditional as the restaurant itself; many servers have been around for decades and handle tables with ease. Lasagna remains the hot menu, but steak lovers might be intrigued by the Gambler, a five-ounce steak served with a salad and garlic bread.

Treasured Landmark. The Rathskeller is a treasured monument to our family. We have met there for years, when visit family enrolled at UNC. We always request the same waiter, who has been there for atleast 20 years. The service and food is always fabulous. It is a must to visit while in Chapel Hill.

10+. An absolute great experience. Great astmosphere and food at reasonable price. Can't beat the service anywhere.

Fast Service with Great Prices. The Rathskeller is one of those rare places that provides quick speedy service everytime you visit. How many places do you know of where you can order from a waiter, receive your meal and pay the check in 40 minutes or less? Not many. The Rat provides good food for an average of $5 to $15 per person and you rarely go away needing more. If you are new to the Rat try the double roast beef dinner, grilled chicken, giant hamburger steak or lausagna. I think you will be greatly satisfied. Granted it's sometimes inconsistent with quality but you can't argue with cost and quantity. A must for the Chapel Hill visitor!
