In Short – In a large brown house on Rosemary Street sits a Chapel Hill institution. A mix of barbecue, country cooking and traditional Southern fare, Mama Dip's has suffered grumblings lately of rising prices, smaller portions and slow service--but the quality of food remains high and the establishment continues to please most visitors. The chicken and dumplings dish is worth the trip alone, but a meal wouldn't be complete without some of the famous fried chicken.

I really hate to bust your bubbles but I alone with 6 of my co workers went to Mama Dips a couple of weeks ago and I was appalled at the service. The attitudes of the waitress as well as the young lady who I understand is her daughter was unbelievable. I was a little concerned about how I was charged ($9.95 for two drumsticks and two sides) and I was told by the cashier (daughter of owner) and I quote "WELL WE HAVE PEOPLE COME IN HERE AND PAY MORE THAN THAT" I could not believe that she said that. What have we become when we do not care how we treat people because we can get someone else to pay us more?????????? I am totally discouraged from ever visitng this place again!!!!As a young high school student I freguented this place long before they became soooo FAMOUS!! Can you imagine being the only african american with 5 of your white co workers(who might I remind you loved this place and we went @ twice a month from Durham)and being treated like your money does not matter??? The people on this bolg who "LOVES: this place either can NOT cook or have not been introduced to REAL homecooking???? (SAD)

Went there for lunch.
For all of the positive press you would think they would get something right.
I would rather not eat than to go back there.
Would not go back for any reason, anytime, no how.
How they stay in business is beyond me.
- Pros: No Pros
- Cons: Poor service, poor food, high cost, not friendly.
Not so great as I had thought...

I grew up in this area but had never been to Mama Dips. Lately I've been trying to visit restaurants in this area that I've never been. I had read a review of Mama Dips here, and was disapointed, thinking that person's experience must have been an isolated incident- we are in the South and surely this place was better than that!
My husband, 6 year old daughter and my best friend went on a Saturday for lunch. Our waitress had no personality and never smiled the entire time, in fact she acted as if we were bothering her to be there..
I was also surprised at the prices right away- I didn't think they would be so pricey- just for lunch. My husband was out of his mind and paid $11 for a chopped BBQ plate. I got the chicken and dumplins and it was kind of runny and I think I like CB better. My daughter's meal was a waffle and it was ok- but we paid $2 extra for a drink for her- and the kids meal was $5- so $7 just for a 6 year old... is kind of a lot for a lunch. My husband's black eyed peas were a little overdone with no flavor. The okra was good but not anything special.
All in all I was also disapointed. I think this seems to be a restaurant where people go thinking it would be better- and then are surprised, that they too, think it was just ok. We ended up paying about $35 for lunch and I normally wouldn't have paid that much, just for a mediocre lunch. Well, at least I can cross this place off my list.
- Pros: Comfort food, but could get this same type at other country restaurant chains- just as good.,.
- Cons: Unfriendly wait staff, food just so-so,
