A Chapel Hill fixture since 1971, there's no better place to get rugged than this place. Customer service rules here: Tell these outdoor gurus where you're going, and they'll produce a shopping list tailored to your trip. Boasting every great camping gadget known to man, this shop can set you up with the simplest stove or the fanciest multipurpose tool. If you're looking for goods on the cheap, shop elsewhere. But don't blame The Trail Shop when your $10 hiking boots bust a hole on the way up the mountain.

The Goods
Clothing inventory includes Patagonia in every incarnation from fleece wear to summer shorts, North Face Gore-Tex parkas, Exofficio quick-dry shirts and many other high-quality, hard-to-find lines. The Trail Shop offers numerous boot and sandal brands, including Vasque, Asolo, Birkenstock and Teva.
