Durham >Bars & Clubs > Tavern
IDK what skinheads in the traditional sense of the word hang out here. I do have a short buzz cut but anything but a skinhead. I've be going to the Tav (cuz its a second home) for over a year and haven't seen anyone who fits that description. Its Durham not Hillsborough! And yea if you Park in Elmo's lot and go to the Tav or vice versa you will get towed. I know I've pointed them out to the bouncer!
If your trying to chill and not be bothered this is the spot.
Ask for the BlomBlom...... :-)
Evil!. Don't go to The Tavern on W. Markham Ave. in Durham. The place is a dump, it apparently draws a white-supremecist skinhead clientele, and it tows people from its poorly-marked parking lot. All around evil!
Man vs. Food with beer. Finally! Great bar food on Ninth Street at a non-bike bar! The Tavern is way classy and has a sandwich called The Gambler that is out of this world! You can hardly wrap your hands around it. Two huge patties and God know what else. They throw the kitchen sink in this one, and it is delicious. I feel like I should get a free t-shirt for eating it though. They also have an awesome beer selection and seems like something new is always on special. Seeing how I'm a guy who likes variety, this will be the place for me. I talked to the manager and they seem to rotate a lot of local beers. A great addition to the Ninth Street area and to Durham.
Great Bar, Good Food, Nice Music Venue.
The Tavern at Markham Avenue relocated to the 9th Street area of Durham in August 2009. Owners Dave and Lindsay Ohlendt worked really hard to transform the former music store into a first class Sports and Music bar.
There are mixed drinks, bottled beer, and a wide selection of draft beers, ales, hard cider, as well as a "Jaeger-Chiller"!
The bar food is super ! Just try the Chicken Pita... or how about a fried baloney sandwich, or else a nice burger-n'-egg, or a meatball sub...
Music regularly happens on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm with The Tavern No-Stars, a group of core musicians who invite others to come sit in and play or sing lead, in an open mic situation. Karaoke starts at 10pm following The Tavern No-Stars appearances.
Fridays, beginning at 9 or 10pm, rock and blues bands are regularly booked to appear; some bands appear Saturday nights as well.
The Tavern is a clean, classy bar, offering arcade games, darts, pool tables, and a shuffle board table. Trivia games and DJ's appear as well, and catered parties or other celebrations can be scheduled with the owners. The staff is friendly and courteous, and anxious to serve up a fun time.
Tip: Go to Neal's Garage across the street during the workday, and register your car (for free) to allow you to park diectly across from the front of The Tavern, in a lot that has surveillance and provides for safety of your automobile. You can catch one of the DJ or bands music shows with no worries, then walk right out to your car!
Lot of Potential, but. The Tavern is everything you'd want in a sports bar. Great food, drinks and events. BUT lately it seems to have been claimed by a local skinhead hate group that likes to harass customers and destroy property in the parking lot. A real shame.
