Durham >Fitness > Gold's Gym
ive been working out at this gym for about 1 year now, in the past year there have been some downs but WAY more ups at the gym.
when the winter got really bad this past one, the heat went out for 2 days and when the summer got bad this year the a/c went out for a day, those are my cons. staff got the gym back in good condition fairly quickly
since ive been there they added lots of new equipment, redid the racquetball courts, put a giant air conditioner in the basketball court (sorely needed!) and added a few more things here and there. the staff is friendly, often having fun and are helpful.
over all its a pretty decent place and id recommend it if you work in the RTP park like me
Gold's Gym RTP - STAY AWAY.
I got a one-year membership with Gold's Gym. I canceled it a few months early and canceled all recurring charges (excluding necessary dues for ending my contract early).
I called to make sure there would be no more recurring charges and was promised there wouldn't be. The next day I called again, just to make sure and the girl on the phone said my account was set charge monthly still but that she fixed it for me. I called the next day, and a different guy on the phone said that the account was set to not charge anymore but that in six months the charges would start up again so I told him to cancel ALL recurring charges which he said he did. I called again to make sure the next day and the girl said my account was not set to charge anymore.
Six months later I got a $40 bill. I called and the phone was passed around about three times before I spoke to "Brian" who told me I'd be given a refund in 5-7 business days and that this "will never happen again in the future". 5-7 business days later I still have no received my refund.
I called to ask if it was possible for me to come in and get copies of my files. The man on the phone said yes, to just come in and they'd copy my records for me. I came in and gave the man my name and that I wanted copies of my records. He went to a manager (after saying there was no manager present in the club on weekends) and spoke with her for a moment in an office. The two of them came out and the manager said I'd need to come back Monday to speak with "Scott Beach" the General Manager in order to see my own files with my own information.
I'm going in tomorrow (Monday) to see Scott and try to get copies of all my records. These files include the paperwork with my express written requests to end ALL charges. These files also include sensitive information such as home address, phone number, social, bank account info, etc.
I've jumped through their hoops and I refuse to play this game anymore. I'm prepared to call the police and have already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (with whom Gold's Gym is not accredited).
I advise everyone interested in Gold's Gym to carefully read their contracts and any and all paperwork THOROUGHLY. Be prepared to play lengthy and expensive games with Gold's Gym and to get the run-around when dealing with staff, especially managers. My sister works at my bank and says she deals with people having this exact problem (with Gold's Gym specifically) all the time. In fact, I recommend you do not use Gold's Gym at all. I strongly advise using another club that won't steal your money.
Rip Off Rip Off-- This gym's contract.
I started gym with goal to shed some extra pounds and tone up body. I was very excited and signed up for 3 months PT training agreement. Just after 4 weeks of training, the trainer (He was good) ran away and blamed the mis-management for his decision. I did not have trainer for few weeks, then new trainer was assigned, who was never consistent with his timing and wanted me to work according to his time. I accommodated that request, and on couple of occassions went to pick him up to train me. You must be calling me obssessed-to-body-building..though I am not but I was trying to be one in those days. But alas!, this trainer ran away after 5 sessions and blamed horrible management for his resignation. Last trainer was consistent but already I was in 5th month still carrying sessions from first 3 months. I had informed to first trainer about 3 month and he had written in his blackberry but Gold gym still charged me for 4th and 5th month. I could have continued but you won't believe , during casual one-on-one meeting with newly appointed fitness director , I , "the client", is being told that this new trainer is novice, inexperienced and further mentioned, that director tells new trainer to try some different exercises that was not conventional. I was ZAPPED. I am paying money for INEXPERIENCED trainer and how glady, plainly director is telling me that.
Then I realized may be my recent back-pain is result of his recommended exercises. So, to take precaution I called Gold gym and told them to refund money for left over sessions and explained what-n-why of situation. But they REFUSED and GM told me that if you will not take it, we will keep this sessions in house. It was matter of $816 and I was so confused as what to do!!
Then I called regional manager and I'm still waiting to hear back. I want to work out once my back pain is gone and same time, don't want to loose my money.
Anyways, Please stay away from this gym. There are other gyms , which are reasonably priced and have not that complex contractual obligations. You will get listening ear behind that front desk elsewhere, believe me. Despite this pathetic experience with this Durham location, I'll join some other gym but never this trashy gym.
Don't be fooled!. Don't be fooled when they show you the plans for the "new renovation" that they are going to do on the gym. This has been in the making for years now. I am guessing the only reason people join this gym is because there aren't many others around. After all I am new to the area....so do your research, see if there are any other gyms around before you sign a year contract. Just a few of the perks that you get for 40 a month. Locker rooms that smell like urine, about 5 different leaks in the weight room as well as one in the lobby when it rains. Pipes leak everyday. This could be the reason for the gym smelling like mold.....Mold spores.....not the best thing to breathe in when doing cardio. ...water fountains broke, weights not racked.....and you realize this as the staff works out while they are on the clock. Cardio equipment that is nasty. And once again....locker rooms that smell like urine. I don't even go there anymore. I drive 20 mins out of my way to go to another gym.
Despite its Hollywood connections, this franchise's focus is on pumping iron, not newfangled razzle-dazzle..
The Terminator and the Incredible Hulk (aka Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno) lifted weights at the gym's Venice, California, flagship years ago, but even today, customers frequenting charter locations are bound to encounter serious muscle. Take note: The boys with bulging biceps are the mascots, not the majority. Gold's generally offers Spinning, aerobics and kickboxing classes, yet weight-training remains the core of the program. Dumbbells and barbells, not spa-like amenities, are the attractions that draw the beef-heads in droves.
Locker rooms are complete. I have been using the RTP location for about 2 years and the locker rooms are finally completed! I agree that they were much needed but Gold's has done wonders with that location since they purchased it 2 years ago. I understand that they are adding more cardio and weights soon as well as other comestic work. I love the staff and members there, it is a great young professional area and people are friendly but there to exercise!
Good & good value. It's not as fancy as O2, but it's open until 10pm (rather than 9 for O2) and has a pool & spa. It's also not too crowded in the evenings. The freeweight area could be a bit larger (they said they plan to double the size) and the showers could use renovation (this is also planned, apparently). The "network" option which lets you use all Gold's Gyms anywhere in the country for free is a great deal for travelers.
