Durham >Blue Corn Cafe
Amazing Seafood Paella.
In a word delicious. The Paella bowl was so full, I could bare eat it all. My wife and I were passing thru Durham late, heading home from a Thanksgiving celebration in WInston-Salem. Durham seemed like a good place to stop for dinner. We visited the Info Bureau on 15 and started looking around. We found the Blue Corn Cafe quite by accident and had a wonderful time. The Saturday nite special was the Paella. I'd certainly have it again, although the menu looked quite good and I might try something else.
Our waitress; and I kick myself for not catching her name, was excellant. More than helpful and attentive; genuinely interested in the cafe and the goings-on in the area. She said she'd worked there for 10+ years from when there was a bookstore next-door. SHe was of medium height, slim with short dark hair; try to get one of her tables. Diffently 2 thumbs up to both the restaurant and to our waitress.
I read the first 15 or so reviews, I found the older "problem" ones to be just that---older. Maybe there was something a year ago; but this past Saturday nite was excellant. Good enough for me to seek out he site and I'm from Maryand.
FANTASTIC FOOD, SERVICE AND OWNERS!. Ive been in the Blue Corn Cafe on numerous occasions and had nothing but great experiences. The food was amazing and is completely organic. Danielle, the owner took the time to personally explain that they cater to vegetarians and vegans, and the food is nothing shy of great. I moved to Durham about 6 months ago from Los Angeles and I love this place! Ive recommended it to people before, and Id recommend it again contrary to people who have put negative reviews. Food and Customer Service were excellent.
Consistently great!. As a patron of this restaurant for almost 14 years, I don't understand the negative posts from other reviewers of Blue Corn Cafe. I dine here weekly and the food and service never let me down. The portions are more than healthy and priced nicely, and the ingredients are always organic and fresh. My vegetarian and gluten-free friends always find something here, as most dishes can be made to order for special dietary needs. The staff is always pleasant and always remember you, and the kid/family friendly atmosphere is fantastic. Also, they have the best mojito ever!
NO BUENO. I have been a frequent diner for years and most recently have found out some disturbing things about the Blue Corn Cafe and just had to share them with anyone who is thinking of visiting or has visited. The combos on the dinner menu state one price but when you get your bill you will find that's not what you pay, it will be more.If your not one to pay close attention to your check you will be taken. I asked my server what kind of tequila was used in the Gold Margaritas which I read on the menu to be CUERVO GOLD but the answer the server gave me was different, she said it was somethting called MONTAZUMA .Which I later found out is one of the cheapest TEQUILAS you can buy at 8.00 dollars a bottle , the same price of a jumbo Margarita. This is a terrible thing to find out when your paying for a certain quality but getting the cheapest substitution, this is just false advertising at its WORST. Give people what they are paying for anything else is just low down and dirty. I usually go for the avocado and tomato salad with the cilantro vinagrette which I also noticed is on the lunch menu served with tortillas, but when you go for dinner you get the same size salad minus the tortillas for 2.00 dollars more. So when you dine at the Blue Corn Cafe expect to be ripped off by portion, quality and price. DINERS BEWARE!!!!!
I rather eat at Cosmic Cantina...... I felt compelled to share a terrible experience like this with the world! I went to this restaurant hoping to dine on authentic spanish cuisine according to what the spanish manager told me. I ordered the mango chicken and the chicken was so tough that I lost my right upper bicuspid. The unenthusiastic disgruntle waitress offered me no help when she came back to the table only but to say "Are you ready for the check?". The bathroom was disgusting, employees displaying aggravation over requests of napkins, clean silverware and water when these things are standard at any other food establishment. Do not sit close to the kitchen with your kids because there you will hear disrespectful talks of sexual connotation by the kitchen staff along with the waitresses referring to the kitchen staff as " mutha@#%!^@% mexicans" as if she were looking for the shock value from my reaction of my face and did not care about my future business. This is by far the worst restaurant on 9th street. This is also one of the most expensive restaurants on 9th street with third class service. I would rather dine at cosmic cantina
My worst dining experience EVER!!!!!!!!. My dining experience at the Blue Corn Cafe was the worst i've ever had in my life ,talk about bad service the waitress was very unprofessional and rude ...it took like an hour just for our food to arrive and when it did it was COLD...I ordered the chicken with mango salsa but the chicken tasted rubber and the rice was hard like rocks....We also ordered a pitcher of margaritas but it seems like all we got is cheap sour mix an no tequila....me nor my classmates have vowed to NEVER go there again....p.s. their expensive too..
horrible, servers are incredibly rude. AWFUL dining experience. The service and dining experience at blue corn is horrendous. I will never go back there again. The wait staff is incredibly rude. We should have left during the middle of the meal - it was that bad. I cannot imagine a worse dining experience.
The Worst Margarita on the Planet. My wife and I ate at Blue Corn this evening and we both feel absolutely violated by what could be the worst margarita ever. We ordered the Jumbo Gold at $8.50 and received a big heaping glass full of nasty commercial grade sours mix with a splash of tequila. Two hours later my stomach is still not right. My wife finished about 20% of hers and left the rest on the table...the waitress said nothing. How can you possibly think your diners are enjoying themselves when they leave two $8 drinks on the table? The food was nothing special. I ordered the stuffed poblanos which came soggy, probably microwaved, certainly frozen at some point. The service was slightly better than awful...you might consider finding servers that enjoy smiling and possibly even people.
Good food, horrendous service. My experience at the Blue Corn Cafe was less than what I would expect from any restuarant. They refused to serve me a glass of water to drink with my meal when I requested it. They said the best they could do was to give me a glass with ice in it and pointed me to the bathroom so I could fill my own glass up. When I go to a restaurant, it is to be served. Clearly, if I wished to get up in the middle of my meal and conversation to serve myself, I would have stayed at home. Also, I don't want to be bringing stuff that is going to be sitting on my dinner table to the bathroom and back. That's just gross! I don't know how this practice is allowed at this restaurant and how it is not a health code violation. But on a brighter note, the food was pretty good.
Blue Corn is a good choice for moderate priced food which seems increasingly hard to find unless one enjoys eating at chain restaurants. However, due to the current drought in the area the restaurant refuses to serve tap water. I find this distasteful and a cheap shot at a restaurant trying to make money selling bottled water. They could instead add a note to the menu-tap water will just be served on request.
I for one won't return to Blue Corn given their new water policy.
