What People Are Saying About Bullock's Bar B Cue Inc

In Short – There's a line out the door, always. The interior is more like Shoney's than an authentic barbeque joint. The patrons are local hipsters, old-school beehivers and everyone in between. The menu is exhaustive, offering almost every Southern comfort-food dish imaginable. Apart from the tasty barbecue, there's fried chiken, meatloaf, spare ribs, and chicken wings. The entrees are prepared with the most flavor and care.

Editor's Tips

What To Eat:
Calorie counters best avoid Bullock's unless they like broiled seafood, which is served in abundance. Get the fresh flounder.
Save Time:
Then hit the grill counter at the restaurant entry and get it to go.

Bullock's Bar B Cue Inc

by TurnerBrown at Citysearch

Permit me to preface this review by letting you know that I'm not knocking the quality of the food or the service, (although our waitress DID allow us to run out of hush puppies and run very low on beverages).

What I AM complaining about was the disruptive and seemingly oblivious family that was seated in the adjoining booth. A father, a mother, two girls in their pre-teens, and a totally loud and disruptive toddler seated at the end of their table in a high chair. Several times during our meal this child was overly loud and just about every time either the mother or the father would lamely utter some, less than convincing, admonition to be quite and to not be disruptive again. There was even a couple of times that the mom started counting.....1.....2.....3, like that was really going to put the fear into this already unruly and disruptive munchkin. The only time that I was FINALLY able to enjoy the remainder of my meal was after their much appreciated departure. As we were paying our tab, the woman at the register asked us if "everything" was OK. I told her that the food was OK but that we were unable to fully enjoy our meal due to the disruptive nature of the family seated in the adjoining booth whereupon she chimed in that she too had heard this child being disruptive. She sympathetically looked at me and my sweetie and rather offer any sort of compensation on the tab or a NEXT visit.....she offered us some free York Peppermint Patties as compensation. Well.....what should I have expected; it's Bullock's and apparently they don't "really" need our patronage, but regardless, we'll more than likely be back because the food IS good and the prices aren't a rip-off. Atmosphere=1 star: Prices=2 stars: Service=3 stars: Food=3&1/2 stars (maybe four if their hush puppies were better flavored).

Not what I'd hoped for in Southern Cooking

by leehays at Citysearch

I was lured to Bullock's by the CitySearch ratings, but can't concur with the high marks given by previous reviewers. The chicken livers were OK, but the sides were mediocre at best. Fried okra and green beans were forgettable. Hush puppies were great. Service was adequate, but you'd never accuse them of being friendly. We'll give them another chance.

Outstanding Customer Service

by old values at Citysearch

These folks are good! Especially Tommy Bullock, the owner/manager. I recently made a special order by phone from the Richmond area. First, my call was personally returned within 24 hours by Tommy. I explained I would be in Durham, NC for only a few hours and wanted my order ready by 5 PM. Even though the order was a special order and not on the menu, it was waiting for me when I arrived. The place was packed with customers! It was a Friday, yet my order was executed perfectly. Thanks again Tommy for a job well done!

Great Food, People.

by wminscoe7 at Citysearch

I have always loved the feeling you get when you walk into Bullocks, The building has so much history, I mean they have been in business and catering for 58 years in Durham!! The food is just as wonderful and I have eaten there around 10 times a year for 20 years and have never once gotten sick from anything I have eaten there. The staff are wonderful, they don't treat you like another number coming thru the door, every time you go you see the same staff members. All the cool celebrities, politicians, athletes, etc. that have eaten Bullocks and obviously loved it from the photos on the wall! I and many, many others love Bullocks BBQ and I know a few people who heard a rumor won't ruin 58 years. Check out www.bullocksbbqcom
