In Short
A quick turn off Chapel Hill Boulevard is all it takes to visit an Old World bakery. The space is cozy and warm, perfumed by the world's oldest aromatherapy. Some customers grab a quick coffee and pastry at a stand-up table, but most take their crinkly white packages home. Among the vast array of breads available are Copenhagen multigrain, volken and classic crusty Tuscan bread. Specialties include brezel and Guglhupf, the bakery's namesake bread.

The food is wonderful. I wish they would hurry up and open for dinner, but it looks like that might be a ways off. I love to go in for Brotchen - it's just like what I remember from living in Germany as a child. They have great seafood risotto, too! If you can get in there when they have wurst on special, don't miss it! Also, the cucumber salad is authentic - and yummy. Everyone who works there is always very nice and helpful. No complaints there. My only gripe is that sometimes it's so popular that it takes a minute to find a place to park! Not the worst thing to have to complain about!

I cannot say enough good things about Guglhupf. Their breakfasts are great and so are their lunches. I don't even know where to start with the bakery items. I'm not a huge fan of pastries or breads, but when I walk in there, I can't help myself. I want to try one of everything. It's a great atmosphere and a beautiful space for lunch with some friends or colleagues. You won't be disappointed.

Guglhupf is probably the best place to get freshly baked bread in town. There selections of breads is very impressive and they carry a variety that is sure to satisfy the most picky of shoppers. I've not ever gotten any kind of bread there which I did not think was very delicious. They also have a number of tasty sweets, although I wish they had more chocolate. Now the cafe, that is another story. The food there was surprisingly bad. Of course the bread for the sandwich was good but the rest of the sandwich was cold and seemed stale. It almost tasted like fast food and I would have expected a lot more from a bakery with the standard of Guglhupf. So I would give the bakery itself a five star and would give the cafe a two star.
