beautiful lazy day

by hdevil

Duke gardens is a lovely way to spend the afternoon. Take a book or your studies and spread out on the field. If you have some extra time, wander through the forest paths. Bundle up, take a beau and find a secluded spot. The Gardens are full of visitors in the summer and spring-finding a parking space on the weekend is quite a challange. But the fall colors and brisk air are just as rewarding.

  • Pros: beautiful walks

One of the most tranquil settings in the Triangle.

by Contributor

In Short
From formal to natural environments, Duke Gardens has many different varieties of native and imported plants, such as the mountain columbine, wisteria and Japanese iris. Find out what's in season, and let the imagination plan one's own garden. Take pets for a walk, throw a Frisbee or just have a quiet picnic with one of the area's best gardens. Keep an eye out for the wisteria growing over the pergola at the main entrance.

A Must See

by niftynip

Beautiful any time of year... each season brings something new and interesting.

The best time to see the garden is in late May and June because the roses are in full bloom.

Pleasant

Duke Gardens is one of the best places to go for a safe and pleasant stroll. Not only are the grounds well maintained, but the landscape is beautiful.

Sold me on Durham

by Maureane

20 years ago Duke garden was the final touch that sold me on coming to Duke over other major medical centers. It's even better now. It is peaceful place for a walk/jog or to regain your equilibrium in a fast-paced world. It is meticulously maintained, with something to see at nearly every time of the year.

  • Pros: free, good parking

One of my favorite escapes

by Kim_Dragon

Duke Gardens is beautiful year-round and very well kept. There are lots of paths and places to explore. There is a large open lawn where you can bask in the sun, have a picnic, or play frisbee. The duck pond is nice and there are several kinds of ducks that live there. There are lots of cozy, peaceful places where you can just sit and read or lay on a bench and look up at the sky through the trees... or whatever "escape" you prefer. If you're into plants and gardening, you can find lots of interesting things here. There are also a lot of neat "architectural" pieces throughout the gardens. My only complaint about Duke Gardens is that many of the plants are not labeled... but, then again, I suppose a bunch of signs would really take away from the beauty of nature.

Eden Found in Durham.

by rinkmurray

Grab a book, blanket, a bag of bread and a weary soul. Relax, rejuvenate and feed the ducks.

This is the easiest place to relax in the triangle.

Nice place to escape

by KForrest_Citysearch

This is the Triangle's best spot to picnic, hands down. I love the flowers, the gazebos and the nice shady spots that you can find if you walk down all the little pathways. The gardens get crowded on nice days, and the parking can be a nightmare--but the experience is worth the hassle.

  • Pros: Gorgeous gardens
  • Cons: Paid parking
