HELL YES, CD ALLEY!!!
by Geitfaust
It's small, and easy to miss, but try not to for within the walls await towers of mighty CD's and vinyls, sitting silently for a host with which they will form a totally awesome symbiotic relationship.
Basically CD alley is awesome, and is now the ONLY place to get CD's in chapel hill now that's schoolkid's got.
Even when Schoolkids was around CD alley was better. I've found so many obscure LP's and EP's there.
And their local music selection cannot be matched.
- Pros: Awesome selection, the people are nice
- Cons: Can be a bit crowded since it's small, parking on franklin is hell so catch a bus
A late entrant to the Chapel Hill record store derby, these guys have made quite an impressive showing.

In Short
CD Alley specializes in what's loosely called alterna-rock--and their inventory tends toward obscure and rare vinyl and CDs from that genre. It's just what the store's clientele craves, since most of the shoppers--and staff--are culled from the local music scene. It gets high marks for having plenty of cool CDs, obscure and foreign music press, and a knowledgeable, helpful staff.

The best record store in Chapel Hill. Staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and unpretentious. Fine selection (but few duplicates), and tons of used CDs. Best prices you'll find anywhere.
- Pros: Value, Service
CD Alley - Precisely Right

CD Alley doesn't have -quite- as much selection as, say, Schoolkids, but the staff are far friendlier and more helpful. They certainly aren't lacking in music, either - a fun place to go and be introduced to something new. I've never had a staffer steer me wrong.
- Pros: Knowledgeable Staff, Great Selection, Friendly Atmosphere
- Cons: Franklin St. Parking

This is the only good record store in the whole area. I stop by every time that I'm in Chapel Hill. Where else can you buy an album from someone who once performed with a dunce cap on his head and Brittany Spear's chest on his shirt?
- Pros: good selection, ability to order
- Cons: parking, distance from home
