First timer with Laura

by maryke at Citysearch

I tried Syd's after reading reviews and was not disappointed at all. Laura is new there and a well kept secret. Funky place, layed -back staff helped me to feel comfortable...nothing pretencious there...Only complaint is I think a $40 haircut is way over priced. My daughter had Gwen and I cannot say she was anything special as far as results go.

  • Pros: Relaxed atmosphere
  • Cons: Pricey

Love it!

by cgavaletz at Citysearch

I have been seeing Marit at Syd's since 2007. I had a really short, awesome cut from her for years, and I ALWAYS got compliments from random strangers asking who cut my hair! I joked with her that I should just get "Syd's" shaved into my head so everyone knows! I am growing my hair out now, and was able to go for months without needing a refresher cut (without looking like I was in the "awkward" growing out stage) because she did such a good job shaping it in the beginning stages. I highly recommend this shop - the atmosphere is funky and unique, and the stylists are great. I will be a loyal customer forever!

  • Pros: atmosphere, staff, stylists
  • Cons: not a lot of parking, but usually adequate

Able to do layers for my crazy fine, thick, and irregularly wavy hair

by vreek at Citysearch

I got a great hair cut from Jenean yesterday. It is not easy to find a person who can cut layers well on my baby-fine, but thick and irregularly wavy shoulder-length hair. As a result of any number of poorly-done layered cuts, I had started wearing it all one length. Jenean was able to cut my hair in a way that met all the criteria I requested, but also had a creative flair. The cut she gave is low-maintenance and unique. It will look good worn either wavy or straight.

If you are looking for a hair stylist who *really listens* to what you ask for, is low-key and friendly, does not rush, and gives you a great cut try Jenean.

  • Pros: Watching customers leaving & looking happy with their great haircuts.
  • Cons: The atmosphere was a bit noisy.

Not Best Chapel Hill Salon

by lfr at Citysearch

Although Syd's received some nice reviews and prompted me to visit this salon, by experience was just OK at best. Compared to salons in Toronto, Montreal, NY, Atlanta, Syd's does not live up to excellence in hairstyling. With a tip my haircut was around $40. Actually I would rather pay more and have a stylist who was experienced and well trained.

  • Pros: They offer water or soda
  • Cons: A very basic salon, no atmosphere and stylists are just average

Fun atmosphere, reasonable prices, great staff

by lila_bean at Citysearch

I've been going to Syd's for about a year now and have only been unsatisfied once with a cut I got from a stylist I had never seen before. I usually see Gwen for cut and color; Marit is also awesome. I love the decor and atmosphere -- this is not a snooty hipster place. They have a variety of magazines, complementary drinks, and good music. Everyone is friendly.

I'm one of those annoying girls who always wants a change, but never knows exactly what I want. Gwen has listened to me fumble for some sort of vague explanation before talking me through what she thinks would look good -- I usually just let her go for it and love the results. I have naturally curly hair that I wear both curly and straight. Gwen gives me cuts that look good both ways, something that not many stylists can do. Her coloring and highlights always looks natural. It's a funky place with friendly, talented stylists -- all for a reasonable price. Love it!

  • Pros: ambience, staff, prices
  • Cons: small parking lot

Syd's rocks!

by jackson71 at Citysearch

A friend recently recommended Syd's Hairshop to me. After seeing her super cute cut, i was inspired to make a change. I have tried several salons in the triangle area with mediocre results. Syd's is relaxed and fun. Friendly staff, especially the receptionist. My stylist Jenny, gave me exactly what I wanted. Now I am inspired to try color! I will definitely be going back to Syd's from now on. I've found my salon in Chapel Hill!!

  • Pros: Amazing price, parking lot!! friendly staff
  • Cons: none

Jenean has THE GIFT

by Luthee at Citysearch

I've had haircuts by a few different stylists at Syd's, and they were all very good, but I've had such great cuts with Jenean that I'm going to be requesting her from now on. She gave me great, long layers a few months ago when my hair was half way down my back, and then when I came in last weekend half wanting a bob, half scared to cut it all, she wisely suggested an in-between "transition" cut, and then gave me the best hair cut I've ever had.

The $110 cuts I used to get in New York don't even come close to this $40 cut.

My mom and my sister both made appointments with her after they saw my hair, and I've received a ton of compliments. I'm super happy with my new cut, and I'll definitely be returning for maintenance trims, rather than waiting 6 months between visits like I usually do.

  • Pros: Casual, fun atmosphere, cool friendly staff, great value

Amy and Syd's both rock!

by GoAmy at Citysearch

I just wanted to take the time to say that Amy Testerman is the best hairstylist I have ever had in my 30 years. She is friendly and always wants to know exactly what I want from the experience, and then does her best to make my hair look just right. I have come in with no idea what I wanted and just let her go at it, and she comes up with the cutest cuts. I trust her so much that Amy will be doing my hair for my wedding this May. I have recommended her to several friends, all of whom are now regular clients. Amy is an asset to Syds.

  • Pros: Amy works there
  • Cons: Some people just can't handle this level of skill.

Depends on who you get

by noooners at Citysearch

REVIEW 1: I had heard lots of good things about Syd's, so after moving back to Chapel Hill from New York (and getting great haircuts there!--and I am totally haircut-phobic. I cut my hair by myself for 7 years until moving to NYC), I decided to give it a try. I told Amy that I just wanted a trim and a little bit of shape to it, as I am growing my hair out. Amy made me thankful that I used to cut my own hair, because when I got home I had to fix it myself, cutting off a good two-three inches (now to my shoulders). The problem wasn't that I didn't like the style, it's that it was simply a bad haircut and that Amy used bad judgment. I do not have thick hair by any measure, but Amy thought that it would be a good idea to use thinning shears. Halfway through the haircut I got the feeling that it was more that she was having fun using those special little scissors than that she was using them to give me a good cut. Then, she cut such short layers throughout that I ended up looking like Carol Brady, the mullet years (you know, the cut that made you say, "my god, she should really just cut off that extra hangy part of her hair so that she could have a really, really cute pixie cut!!!"). Oh thank you, Amy, for making my hair so thin that it looks like I plastered it to my head! Thank you, thank you, dear Amy, for I will never have to wear a bike helmet again, as my hair looks so much like one already that any cop would mistake me for someone playing it safe! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

REVIEW 2: Oh, Gwen! You gave me the most rockin' hair color ever: super blonde that would be too sweet, except for the incredible, badass pink streaks you put in it! Gwen did exactly what I asked for, and she spent a lot of time analyzing my hair to make sure it would come out just right. Awesome!!

  • Pros: Cheap cut/color. Good parking. Cute salon. GWEN.
  • Cons: Uhh, the staff? No, the skill level. No no, the end result. Oh no, maybe the thinning shears? Oh, uh, all of that. Plus having to walk out looking like a mullet head.
