GREAT PLACE FOR CHEESE FRIES & COLD BEER!!

by J5S

WE EAT THERE AND WE ARE AWESOME! All kidding aside, it has the BEST CHEESE FRIES to go with cold beer on all of Franklin St. (or anywhere else in the Chapel Hill/Durham area for that matter). It is under new management since July, 2009 and smack in the MIDDLE of Franklin St. - perfect location! Try them out.

  • Pros: Clean, well lit, friendly service, good food/booz, large TVs
  • Cons: none - because the location is PRIME on Franklin St.

Carolina Coffee Shop a "must stop"

by CHBill

Brunch today @ the Carolina Coffee Shop (under new ownership) was perfect in every way. We were seated promptly, the service was efficient and attentive, and, most importantly, the Eggs Benedict arrived quickly, and perfectly cooked. Very highly recommended

  • Pros: Best coffee in Chapel Hill

Not so good

by maryke

Overpriced and simply not worth the porice. Waiter was rather rude and condescending...why I do not know?

  • Pros: Great view of traffic
  • Cons: Food and service

It's changed!

by footsy

The Coffee Shop was for years our place to take out-of-towners or for a comfortable dinner with friends before crossing the street to the Varsity Theater. The place had an interesting & changing menu with innovative items (trout was always interesting). It "feel" was old, local, comfortable, established, historic (since 1926).

No more. Apparently the business plan has changed to attract UNC students.

Last night we entered to hear muzak from the 60s and current. The menu is almost all burgers, sandwiches and a few salads (there are daily entrees, but none last night were appealing). My Coffee House Club Turkey was an acceptable turkey sandwich, but it was not a club sandwich, and it offered only modest amounts of turkey, bacon, lettuce & tomato (at $8, it was overpriced and not really as good as Arby's). My wife's grilled tuna sandwich was ordered with whole wheat bread came in a hamburger bun, and the tuna was dry.

The pecan pie was indeed very good - better, my wife said, than her own recipe.

But from now on, if we eat downtown it will be (gasp!) at Spanky's because of their wider menu (or Pepper's for pizza). And if we take out-of-towners to Franklin Street, we'll stick with Top of the Hill.

BEST BURGER - The Hot Bacon Provolone Cheeseburger!!

by gfw1253

BEST BURGER - The Hot Bacon Provolone Cheeseburger with onion!! Cozy atmosphere, a little pricey but nice!

  • Pros: cozy and quaint - a real college town atmosphere
  • Cons: no parking for call-in pick ups! But if you have a friend to drive around while you run in, it's worth it.

Avoid the Coffee shop

by AEdwa30830

I was completely dissapointed with the entire experience at he COffee shop this morning. My server never popped over to greet or take drink orders. I had to tell the hostess and she retrieved the drinks. Finally after 30minutes from sitting down the server came over and took our order. My dish (breakfast food) took quite awhile and the eggs were wrong. When the dish arrived back the entire meal was cold and uneatable. My drinks were never refilled. I looked up a couple of times and noticed that there wasn't one server in the dinning room. I will never return and do not recomend this to anyone!!

Bad Experience

by parlormagic

We went here on a Sunday after church. There was a bit of a wait, which we thought was a good thing. After we were seated it took nearly 10 minutes for a server to even appear. When we finally got her attention we had to ask for *everything* (silverware, napkins, creamer). They ran out of some of their key foods (part of which were included in our order) and offered to knock off a few bucks if we would keep the order and the substituted something else so we agreed. We waited 30+ minutes for our order (breakfast food) and when it came it was awful. cold and gross. we would have complained but our server never came back to our table. when we finally got our bill they had only discounted our order $1.55 (!) and when I told the server that the whole meal had been bad she apologized and spoke with the manager. who did nothing.

yuck!!! we will never go back here. it is expensive and just plain bad - bad service and bad food.

  • Pros: convenient
  • Cons: bad service, terrible food, dirty

Avoid the "Hair-O-Lina" Coffee Shop

by tedinthehill

I went to the Carolina Coffee Shop for lunch and was quite disappointed. I ordered a breakfast dish with meat, eggs and potatoes. After I had eaten a few bites I noticed a long black hair protruding from my eggs. The hair had obviously been cooked into the food. I let the waitress know and she kindly offered to bring me another dish. I ordered the fish special which was a battered and fried catfish. My dish came out in a matter of minutes, which made me think that they had actually given me someone else's order. Sadly, I found sticking out from the batter of the fried fish another long black hair. I was beyond losing my appetite. The manager/owner of the store was in that day, and knew about the situation but did not bother to come by and apologize. Instead the waitress came to our table and was nice and apologized but gave me a card that said "good for one entree, does not include drinks or gratuities" signed by the manager.

I thought to myself "why would I want to come back?"

  • Pros: Good location
  • Cons: Doesn't have to impress non-college crowd

Popular brunch, sturdy dinner and a late-night bar scene.

by Contributor

In Short
This college institution looks charming but well used, with ageless brick walls, wooden floors, decrepit chandeliers and wooden booths. True to its collegiate nature, breakfast is served until 2pm; eggs benedict and Belgian waffles pack in students and game-day alums.

Terrible Service

by aniala228

I used to enjoy eating here, but lately my service has been horrendous. It took almost 15 minutes to get our drinks - and you can forget about getting refills. They made absolutely no accomidations to making my visit better, even after I complained. Definitely will not go back here, and would not recommend others.
