Went there for lunch.
For all of the positive press you would think they would get something right.
I would rather not eat than to go back there.
Would not go back for any reason, anytime, no how.
How they stay in business is beyond me.
- Pros: No Pros
- Cons: Poor service, poor food, high cost, not friendly.
Not so great as I had thought...

I grew up in this area but had never been to Mama Dips. Lately I've been trying to visit restaurants in this area that I've never been. I had read a review of Mama Dips here, and was disapointed, thinking that person's experience must have been an isolated incident- we are in the South and surely this place was better than that!
My husband, 6 year old daughter and my best friend went on a Saturday for lunch. Our waitress had no personality and never smiled the entire time, in fact she acted as if we were bothering her to be there..
I was also surprised at the prices right away- I didn't think they would be so pricey- just for lunch. My husband was out of his mind and paid $11 for a chopped BBQ plate. I got the chicken and dumplins and it was kind of runny and I think I like CB better. My daughter's meal was a waffle and it was ok- but we paid $2 extra for a drink for her- and the kids meal was $5- so $7 just for a 6 year old... is kind of a lot for a lunch. My husband's black eyed peas were a little overdone with no flavor. The okra was good but not anything special.
All in all I was also disapointed. I think this seems to be a restaurant where people go thinking it would be better- and then are surprised, that they too, think it was just ok. We ended up paying about $35 for lunch and I normally wouldn't have paid that much, just for a mediocre lunch. Well, at least I can cross this place off my list.
- Pros: Comfort food, but could get this same type at other country restaurant chains- just as good.,.
- Cons: Unfriendly wait staff, food just so-so,

The best fried chicken anywhere! Lovely atmosphere and good service. The Pecan pie is to die for.
They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Price is reasonable.
Worst experience ever!

I was so excited when I first saw Mama Dip on the food net work channel. I immediately called my brother who lives in Chapel Hill and asked him if he had ever been to the restaurant. He said no but that his girlfriend had. I talked with her and lost all the excitement when she started telling me all of the negative stories about Ms. Council. But I believe in finding out for myself. My sisters and I have a monthly meeting and a while back I encouraged everyone to go to Mama Dips. Oh was I in for a rude awakening. Upon entering the restaurant we were lead to our seats and I saw Mama Dip sitting at a table with some of her customers. When I entered the room, I took out my cell phone to use the camera to take a picture of our group going into the room to be seated and I said oh there is Mama Dip. She did not even acknowlege our presence but in a forceful voice said to me that she hated to see people using cell phones and that she had other customers in the restauarant. I never put the phone to my ear nor did she ear me say anything on the phone, I only wanted to take of picture of the monumental occassion or so I thought. She immediately got up and left the dinning area without even greeting her customers. I was so embarassed when my group looked at me and said why did you bring us here. I apologized and could not believe what I had just witnessed. One of the wait staff looked at us as if to apologize for the rude behavior of this woman. The food was not tasty at all. I couldn't believe that we actually stayed to eat. I had my 87 year old mother with me and didn't want her to have to walk some where else. Everything my brother's girlfriend said about her was true. I had to find out the hard way. Shame on her for treating her customers with such disrespect. I will never go again or refer anyone.
- Pros: Nice rocking chairs on porch
- Cons: personal treatment was awful

I visited Mama Dips on 080308. This was my first time and the food was delicious. The service was promt by the waiter and waitress. The food was hot and tasty when brought to the tables. We were a party of about 20 and there were no complaints. We did have to wait for some appetizers but they were hot and fresh when received. Because of the size of our group we called ahead and they were ready to serve us when we arrived. I recommend Mama Dips and will go again when I'm in the area.
- Pros: Fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, pulled pork

I had wanted to visit Mama Dips for years and was so happy to go there. The food was wonderful as was the atmosphere. I loved meeting Mama Dip. This is the real thing, from a real southerner!
- Pros: Great Southern Food
- Cons: May be too Southern for non-southerners

I personally have never worked there, however I know five people who hates working there. I thought SLAVERY was over. Her employees never get raises or breaks. She needs to be reviewed be the Labor Law. They are treated poorly and not trained properly on customer service.
- Pros: none
- Cons: challenge me and see for yourself

If you like those little resturants that remind you of place you used to go after church to eat, say Grand ma's house, then Mama Dips is the place. Greens, Fried chicken, old fashioned macaroni & cheese, cobbler, pound cake, black eyed peas, great hospitality. Mama Dips was worth the trip from Ohio! Keep up the good work Mama Dip! Plus, Mama Dip herself was dining in the regular dining room like we were. What a great touch!
- Pros: Great Southern Hospitality, Great food, Great variety
- Cons: Very easy to miss; directions are complicated through UNC campus.
