you get what you pay for

If you like sitting in a booth with a view of five TV screens on at least two different stations then this is the place for you. Absolutely tasteless food will compliment your aural experience of trying to sort out the various TV audios versus the piped in hispanic music. English is also not understood here very well.
All in all, don't bother - go to El Rodeo instead.
- Pros: nada
- Cons: decor, food, sound
Great food at a great price!
by dundare
The prices were excellent. The food was quite tasty.
My wife had the chicken fajitas and they were excellent. Big portions and perfectly prepared. I had the chicken carnitas de pollo and it was wonderful. The salsa and chips were decent - the salsa was a little bland.
The service was very good. We were seated promptly and attended to regularly. My only gripe was that our waiter didnt really seem very personable, but thats only a minor quibble.
We havent been to too many Mexican restaurants since moving to North Carolina, but this sure beats the overpriced Margarets Cantina in Chapel Hill and the generic On the Border chain on 15 501 in Durham.
Truly unappetizing, bland and tasteless Mexican food.

I'm going to take the opposite view. I love Mexican food and Durham has many really good Mexican restaurants to choose from. However, having just finished a meal at Torero's on W Main Street it is my opinion that this is not one of the good ones. The thing I like about Mexican food is the combination of spices, flavors, and textures. My dinner this evening ("Dos Amigos"on the menu) was the most tastless dinner that I have eaten in a good long time. The salsa verde tasted bland like one would expect a paste of water and flour would taste. And the meat was tough (overcooked) to the point of being too hard to chew. Nothing, no flavor, tough to chew. The chile colorado was only minutely better. And, the meat was, in and of itself, fairly tasteless. I would rate this as the second worse meal that I've eaten in Durham -- ever. At checkout, when I was asked "how was your meal?", I gave my honest opinion and nothing was said; no remarks, no questions, no response at all. Maybe other people will like Mexican food that tastes like nothing, but it's not for me. I've had better Mexican food from the frozen food selection at the local grocery, much better.
- Pros: Convenient parking
- Cons: The food was awful
Authentic food, festive atmosphere.

In Short
Torero's is known for its fresh, tasty, and "pretty authentic" Mexican food--as well as its casual atmosphere. Torero's features traditional Mexican fare, filling without being quite as heavy as the combos at other local cantinas. Torero's has a great bar with a good liquor selection, Mexican beers, huge margaritas, and just the right festive atmosphere.

Their food is consistently good, and the servers are always smiling and friendly. This is a favorite of mine, and I go here often! Try the cheese dip.
- Pros: really good food, inexpensive, quick seating
- Cons: poor ambience
Well worth a vist if in need of Mexican

Imaginative menus - not just burrito based food, but a selection of spiced meats nicely presented. Cheap domestic beer specials. Busy, but no wait on Thursday night.

Better than Most

If you're used to eating at El Rodeo or El Dorado, you should try Torero's for a step up. It falls in the same price range, though the menu isn't generic and they've put some thought into their offerings. Good mix of college kids and families most nights.
- Pros: Somewhat Authentic, Cheap
