I rather eat at Cosmic Cantina.....
by JavierRicard
I felt compelled to share a terrible experience like this with the world! I went to this restaurant hoping to dine on authentic spanish cuisine according to what the spanish manager told me. I ordered the mango chicken and the chicken was so tough that I lost my right upper bicuspid. The unenthusiastic disgruntle waitress offered me no help when she came back to the table only but to say "Are you ready for the check?". The bathroom was disgusting, employees displaying aggravation over requests of napkins, clean silverware and water when these things are standard at any other food establishment. Do not sit close to the kitchen with your kids because there you will hear disrespectful talks of sexual connotation by the kitchen staff along with the waitresses referring to the kitchen staff as " mutha@#%!^@% mexicans" as if she were looking for the shock value from my reaction of my face and did not care about my future business. This is by far the worst restaurant on 9th street. This is also one of the most expensive restaurants on 9th street with third class service. I would rather dine at cosmic cantina
My worst dining experience EVER!!!!!!!!

My dining experience at the Blue Corn Cafe was the worst i've ever had in my life ,talk about bad service the waitress was very unprofessional and rude ...it took like an hour just for our food to arrive and when it did it was COLD...I ordered the chicken with mango salsa but the chicken tasted rubber and the rice was hard like rocks....We also ordered a pitcher of margaritas but it seems like all we got is cheap sour mix an no tequila....me nor my classmates have vowed to NEVER go there again....p.s. their expensive too..
horrible, servers are incredibly rude. AWFUL dining experience

The service and dining experience at blue corn is horrendous. I will never go back there again. The wait staff is incredibly rude. We should have left during the middle of the meal - it was that bad. I cannot imagine a worse dining experience.
- Pros: none
- Cons: terrible service
The Worst Margarita on the Planet
by brew502
My wife and I ate at Blue Corn this evening and we both feel absolutely violated by what could be the worst margarita ever. We ordered the Jumbo Gold at $8.50 and received a big heaping glass full of nasty commercial grade sours mix with a splash of tequila. Two hours later my stomach is still not right. My wife finished about 20% of hers and left the rest on the table...the waitress said nothing. How can you possibly think your diners are enjoying themselves when they leave two $8 drinks on the table? The food was nothing special. I ordered the stuffed poblanos which came soggy, probably microwaved, certainly frozen at some point. The service was slightly better than awful...you might consider finding servers that enjoy smiling and possibly even people.
Good food, horrendous service

My experience at the Blue Corn Cafe was less than what I would expect from any restuarant. They refused to serve me a glass of water to drink with my meal when I requested it. They said the best they could do was to give me a glass with ice in it and pointed me to the bathroom so I could fill my own glass up. When I go to a restaurant, it is to be served. Clearly, if I wished to get up in the middle of my meal and conversation to serve myself, I would have stayed at home. Also, I don't want to be bringing stuff that is going to be sitting on my dinner table to the bathroom and back. That's just gross! I don't know how this practice is allowed at this restaurant and how it is not a health code violation. But on a brighter note, the food was pretty good.
- Cons: Service
Good Food

Blue Corn is a good choice for moderate priced food which seems increasingly hard to find unless one enjoys eating at chain restaurants. However, due to the current drought in the area the restaurant refuses to serve tap water. I find this distasteful and a cheap shot at a restaurant trying to make money selling bottled water. They could instead add a note to the menu-tap water will just be served on request.
I for one won't return to Blue Corn given their new water policy.
Amazing salsa!

Blue Corn Cafe is located in a very cute area of Durham, which pairs a small town feel with an almost boutique-y one. The restaurant used to be quite small but has recently expanded. The food is delicious and fresh, and the salsa is near-addictive. Their vegetarian options are great - I highly recommend their Green Enchiladas!
Great Flavor and Service

Great live jazz on Tuesdays nights and tasty margaritas. Most waiters are duke students so i would tip nicely (unless you are a UNC fan).
- Pros: Private Dining Room, Service, Authentic
- Cons: Ambience
Decent food

I've gone about four times and always thought that the food and service were good. Not great but good. I usually get the first chicken dish which I think has mango and some other items on top with beans and mashed potatoes. Good but I decided to go with the taco salad. Not bad but nothing to write about. I like supporting local restaurants and it's definitely a place to check out. The prices are okay.
- Pros: A lot of choices of entrees
- Cons: Parking can sometimes be a problem
lackluster

Blue Corn was pathetic last night. It was my first time, after hearing good things about it. The waitress was laughably inept and uninterested. The food extremely so-so. I had chicken with mango salsa - a huge portion, but oversalted, dry and chewy. There was a side of black beans and corn that was boring and overcooked. The only saving grace was a tasty margarita. I won't be back.
