The Best Mac and Cheese in North Carolina

by rhawig

When I think of Fosters I think of the best mac and cheese ever! My father in law HAS to go to Fosters when he comes to North Carolina to visit. We always have to get a pound of the mac and cheese to share at the table in addition to the awesome entrees that we order.

anything on the menu

A NEAT AND LOCAL HANG OUT FOSTERS IS DUHAM'S BEST KEPT SECRET. SARAH FOSTER WAS

MARTHA STEWARTS CATERER, THAT'S SOME PRETTY STIFF COMPITTION. YOU'LL FIND AN ARRAY

OF SANDWICHS, SOUPS, AND SUCH. ALSO, NOT TO BE MISSED IS THEIR 3 PEPPER JELLY.

I LOVE ALL OF THE WINES, AND THE ESPRESSO BAR. GO CHECK IT OUT. IT 'S VERY UNIQUE FOR

THE TRIANGLE. I THINK FOSTER'S SUCCESS IS RESPONSABLE FOR THE TRENDY GOURMAT CAFE BOOM THAT HAPPENED HERE ABOUT 7 YEARS AGO.

  • Pros: IT'S CLEAN, AND EVERYTHING IS YUMMY.
  • Cons: THE STAFF HAS MAJOR ATTITUDE

Great breakfast food, pastries, and coffee!

by jessgottlieb

we went for lunch on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and it was a great experience. They took our order right away, we found a table right away (there were 3 people in the group), our food came out right away, and everything tasted great! I've also had a lunch box from here for a school event and it was much better than the average deli sandwich. Major props for the roasted potato salad and the big Foster's Market cookie. It's the place I'll take all visitors from now on.

  • Cons: The seating was a little random, but it felt like a picnic so it was fun.

A country market brings refined flavors to comfort food.

by Contributor

In Short
The baskets overflowing with scones, the bins of unfamiliar and alluring candy, the big serving bowls of fresh salads, creaky wooden floors--it's picture-perfect, country-market charm. Chalkboards and hanging signs tout a menu that's tweaked daily; step up and place your order, then sink into a sofa or pull up one of the mismatched chairs on the leafy patio. Sandwiches and wraps get a gourmet touch. Even an ordinary grilled pimiento cheese sandwich tastes extraordinary.

Forget the reviews from 2002-2003. This is (again) the best cafe in Durham!

by drouina

Fosters Market is my favorite place in Durham...I moved here about a month ago and have been there a dozen times already. It was recommended to me by friends who went to Duke undergrad, so it was THE cafe from 1998-2001. Judging from the bad (but old) reviews on this site, it apparently went downhill in 2002-03, but maybe the owners read this site, because it's awesome again. I brought my visiting family members (7 people) to Foster's yesterday, and everyone raved about the food so much they suggested we go there for breakfast again today. I also sit there and study for HOURS and they never, ever bother you, even when you go back to refill your bottomless cup of coffee 17 times. It has a FANTASTIC student atmosphere (note to students: bring your iPod, because the place is also family-friendly), and it sure beats the Duke law library, which doesn't have a tasty selection of baked goods. Mmm.

  • Pros: Great for studying (students tend to sit at the big table in the back), good coffee/food.
  • Cons: It's a little expensive for a student budget (~$7 for a sandwich/wrap), but worth it.

great desserts

by willsp22

I have been eating at fosters for the past year, upon moving to raleigh. I have to say the desserts are the best i have had in the triangle. Lunch and dinner is either very good or unseasoned. i would love to see a fosters open in downtown raleigh, the area is dying for it. Don't miss the coconut cake, chocolate peanut butter bars or the chocolate whoppers.

  • Pros: baked goods superb, friendly staff

Waste of time and money!

by lisawalter

This was the worst dining experience I have had so far in the Triangle. Several people have mentioned this place to me as a good place to take the kids, but I can't imagine why. The only item offered as a kids' item was a grilled cheese sandwich that tasted like cardboard. The macaroni and cheese sold by the pound was dramatically overspiced and gooey. Neither of my children would eat, and they are NOT picky eaters! My Thai Chicken wrap was mostly lettuce with barely any dressingand it fell completely apart when I tried to eat it. My single beer came out of the cooler WARM. NO ambience at all - a bunch of rundown tables and chairs scattered around with no sense of order - a general state of disarray. At least I have one place that I can cross OFF my list of places to go!

  • Pros: ample parking
  • Cons: no children's items, fairly high prices, poor food quality

put a fork in it...

by hello2003

I have not had an enjoyable meal at foster's in the past four years. The food is not longer interesting or as fresh/tasty as it used to be, and the service and prices are just as bad as ever. I think that I am done with trying to catch them on a "good day".

Unique Dining Experience

by RhondaBeck

If you are looking for some home cooked Southern food with a twist, Foster's Market is the place to go. Daily specials are one of a kind, fresh, & tasty. Sandwiches are big enough to share & all topped with fresh ingredients. Do not miss out on the Triangle's very best desserts either!

  • Pros: great food, gourmet groceries, fun atmosphere
  • Cons: crowded
