The Pulse of the city
by AltonMJoyner
This is the best place in the city for great food, grassroot intellectual stimulation, and don't leave town without sampling the "Friday Night Jazz" sessions. If you want to "check the pulse of the "real Durham", "Meet at the Knowl" and ask for Bruce.
- Pros: Wholesome atmosphere, Good people, Friendly
- Cons: None

We had a great time here! While we were looking forward to the veggie bbq (they no longer serve this) everything else was great! They serve no pork, so anyone looking for that will be sorely disappointed.
- Pros: Different kinds of food
- Cons: ambiance
This African-American bookstore--an institution in Durham since 1982--isn't known for its restaurant, but it should be.

In Short
As you walk into this bookstore, you might not notice the restaurant tucked into a small side room. About 10 tables and booths line the simple diner-style eatery. Order a platter to try two or three wonderful side dishes. Macaroni and cheese, red beans and rice, and coleslaw are fabulous choices, and delectable yams come perfectly sweet. If you like spicy, go with jerk chicken. The specialty is seafood, a evidenced by the baked catfish.
